    Using Washer After 40 Years

Or one which has been in (nearly) continual use? My '82 FF was our daily driver until 2020, and then a few times a year for 3 years. I put it back into daily service a couple of years ago, admittedly with fewer demands for a household of 2. Never an issue or need for service, so nothing has ever...

    Heat pump water heater?

I've had one at a second home for 12 years. It's in an unfinished basement, where I like it very much. It functions as a dehumidifier in summer, when that space tends to be very damp. I no longer need to run a dehumidifier there, adding to the savings. Yes, it does cool the space, but in my...

    Early Youngstown dishwasher/sink combo

Careful what you wish for! My parents had one for a while in the 60s. For an early machine it washed really well, with a booster heater tank & fine mesh filter. But the upper rack only held 9 glasses & 8 cups, and had to be lifted out & balanced precariously on the edge of the sink to access the...

Hotpoint dishwasher from 50's detergent dispenser question...

It looks to me that this is an earlier model, before the one shown in your manual. I've used a '51 model which had only the one indentation open cup shown. It had the same cycle sequence, with a brief spray & drain flush followed by 2 5 minute wash periods. I think the theory was that the deep...

    Physical part stores

Twin city supply here in Providence RI has had the few parts I've needed- whirlpool & GE. Prices seem reasonable. There's also a guy at Barrington Radio (GE dealer) who apparently has a warehouse full of vintage stuff. had the chrome control panel for my KDS18. nice guy.

How often do you use the self clean function on your oven?

My Americana is about 45 years old I think- no appliance outlet but analog clock. I use SC once or twice a year, always with the racks in order to clean the panels from the upper over, and sometimes with the porcelain drip bowls. Never a problem or issue.

New Standards Proposed For Water Heaters

Pushback against mandates is understandable, but I have no complaint with my 10 year old geospring HP water heater. Saves money, acts as a dehumidifier too. No louder than a refrigerator. No problem to date. I like its flexibility. It can be used as a HP only, conventional electric only, or a...

    Vintage dishwasher.

It was a line from GE's book about Appliance Park- "A Walk Through the Park". It seemed to imply that this machine- (GE's first automatic portable?) played a part in making dishwashers more mainstream. I wonder if sales figures support the suggestion that it was a game changer?

    Vintage dishwasher.

my first dishwasher. Incredibly ancient when I bought it for 10 bucks in 1970. Worked surprisingly well for an impeller machine. Said to be "the dishwasher that saved an industry". Wonder if that was just hype, or based on sales?

    Hotpoint shrapnel?

I've now fished two hunks of metal out of the pump of a Hotpoint washer VBSR3100. Anyone know what they might have broken from? Easily replaceable? Or just let it go until more breaks off. It's an OK machine, nothing special, about 18 years old. So I'm not interested in putting much time or...

Another water heater failure! 6 years

I've had a GE heat pump WH in a second home for about 10 years. Very happy with it, no trouble so far. Cost $100 bucks or so after rebates and tax credits. Very cold town water,  and a cool basement besides, so recovery is slow but ok. In my basement location it does double duty, replacing a...

    Youngstown Dishwasher Sink

My parents had this machine back in the 60's. very limited top rack ( 8 cups & 9 glasses, IIRC) which had to be lifted out to get anything in the bottom. But it washed beautifully with a 9 minute cycle. I often wondered why FD spin tube machines didn't copy the smaller holes, which it seemed...

    Beautiful Pink Hotpoint Stove

Looks like this model had a RR sensitemp unit - the element that could be used with a thrift cooker or raised to the surface. I don't remember seeing that on any other GE built range. Seems that would make it more trouble prone. Wonder how well it worked?
