What are your earliest and favorite appliance memories?
- As a kid growing up in Brooklyn, helping mom do the family wash in her Pink Lady(60 Lady Kenmore), watching the continuously running filter and helping her pick her weekly giant size box of detergent. While the folks were die hard Kenmore fans, I really didn;t like the Pink Lady all that much (except for the fact it was pink. That annoying oob buzzer could wake the dead and I found the high pitched whine of the agitation and spin sort of annoying. Truthfully, I lived for Mondays when we would spend the day with Aunt Jennie a few blocks away on Adelphi Street. She had a 1955 Norge timeline and I loved the deep repetitive mechanical sound it made during the agitation - but we never were able to watch it spin the water out. I also loved watching the timeline advance through the cycle. I loved heloping her measure out the Fab, Rinso Blue or Cheer, sprinkling it into the tub and watching for the bubble show. The greatest thing was helping her mix the bluing for the rinse water and watching that navy blue water swirl around with the white clothes. Mostly though I loved that she found my interest perfectly natural and she got as much of a kick out of it as I did. We would stand by the Norge and have the best conversations about everything - never forgot this. I also owe her a great debt - she taught me all I know about laundry and ironing...... Ah, my youth.......
Other favorite memories were of discovering different brands of appliances in friends houses- - when we moved to CT, I wasted no time in finding out that our neighbors across the street had a Norge Timeline washer and dryer, one of my friends had a Philco Automagic window door dryer (paired with a run of the mill Maytag washer) and one of my best friends had a 1962 Philco-Bendix "Miss America" washer paired with a Westinghouse Laundromat dryer ( with the square window door). So different from our basic Kenmore stuff. Interesting, my father insisted on Kenmore because "he could always get parts to fix them" - and he seemed to be doing that very often!!!!
What is the history of appliances you have owned?
-Nothing dramatic. Basic Kenmore Laundry until 1980 when I took over the purchasing and procured the first GE filter-flo. That thing went night and day for 16 years with no problems. Got another in 1996 - two years and three transmissions later GE replaced it with their new "plastic" model. A year and a half later - they bought this back outright and I switched to Amana - stainless steel - - what can I say? However after only 3 years, the Amana developed a main tub seal leak that no wanted to fix, so the appliance store replaced it with a Maytag LAT2600. Not as much fun as the Amana, but hopefully a bit more dependable.....
Probably the most interesting appliance my family owned was a 1974 Hotpoint "under the sink dishwasher which had half a top rack. It was the only way we were going to get a dishwasher in a small kitchen!
Have you ever worked on, repaired and/or restored any major appliances?
