Twin-tub washer - early 1970s Simplicity (Speed Queen) SuperTwin
What are your dream machines yet to be found?
mid-1940s G.E. wringer washer.
1940s and/or 1950s Speed Queen wringer washer.
1950s Blackstone automatic.
What are your earliest and favorite appliance memories?
Helping my grandmother in the 1960s do the wash in her Zenith wringer washer. She had a separate wash-house about 20 yards away from the farm house, complete with a wood/gas stove, hot water tank, and gas dryer. Her previous washer had been a gas-powered Westinghouse, prior to my birth. In 1973, she got a new Simplicity (McGraw-Edison) wringer washer, never wanting an automatic.
What is the history of appliances you have owned?
In 1979, I bought my first machine, which was a 1960s Hoover washer/spin dryer (model 0510), which I sold in 2013. I paid $25.00 at a small town hardware store. Sold it 34 years later for $100!
Then in the early 80s, I bought a brand new, white, Simplicity SuperTwin portable twin-tub washer, that I sold in 1990 (subsequently wishing I hadnt!)
In September 2009, I acquired my 1977 Maytag E2LP wringer washer, and later that same month, a Speed Queen Super-Twin. Both of them Craigslist finds.
A trip to Iowa in the summer of 2012 took me to the town of Early, and Hardware Hank, where I bought a 1935 Maytag model 30 that was in very rough shape, having been left outside in the elements for countless years. I have video and photos posted on YouTube and Flickr of the restoration process.
In 2015, I found a rare Maytag Model 30 with a pump (Model 30WP) and had it shipped from Pennsylvania to the west coast. Again, there are videos and photos posted of the restoration.
In early 2017, acquired a 1940 Maytag Model 32 and completed a full restoration.
Have you ever worked on, repaired and/or restored any major appliances?
Yes, fully restored 5 Maytag wringer washers - a 1928 Model 90, a 1935 Model 30, a 1935 Model 30WP (pump model), 1940 Model 32, and 1937 Model 30. Two of these restorations (the Model 90 and a Model 30) were volunteer projects at local museums.
Summer 2018, soft restoration on a circa 1940s wringer washer made by Fairgrieve & Son, Ltd (a Canadian brand that supplied Eatons department store.
Spring 2019, restored a circa 1948 Zenith wringer washer.
Completely dismantled and repaired a 1970s KitchenAid model KDS-18 dishwasher (with "Black-Glas" front panel.)
Also repaired the pump on the Hoover twin-tub (they are notorious for leaking!)
