My aunt Viola had the 1955 filter flo with the black background cycle dial and black control buttons for water temp and water saver. It had a back hinged lid.
Those heat release icemakers were very trouble free back when this film was made. Our 1966 Coldspot bottom freezer ice maker lasted the life of the refrigerator (33 years) without a malfunction or repair. Also our 1988 Whirlpool bottom freezer had same and lasted the life of the refrigerator...
I think that is their sneaky way of energy savings. The stand alone top loaders do the same thing. I tell my customers to leave the lid up while filling to avoid that.
Water level switch kicked in if the outer tub was filled with water to prevent an overflow. Had one for awhile. I believe this was the first one piece stack unit.
