What are your dream machines yet to be found?
GM Frigidaire Unimatic
What are your earliest and favorite appliance memories?
When I was 2 I asked to watch my parents approx 1994 Kenmore 80 series my dad would hold his finger in the lid switch so I could watch it spin. It would agitate with the lid open. I loved to watch that machine .
What is the history of appliances you have owned?
My first washer was a Maytag with the HE agitator, I sold it because I didn’t like the performance. My mom sold me her Speed Queen AWN542 when she got a larger washer I kept that until my wife said she wanted a front loader. I sadly sold the speed queen, and bought and found a returned LG matching set. I had to put a control board in the washer, and new dampers but my wife was happy. For about 3 years that was our only machine until we bought a house and I had a garage. A renewed interest hit me when the LG started acting up. I was researching replacing it and got frustrated with all modern designs especially the new TL speed queens. I ended up fixing the LG but was looking for an older direct drive I figured I would hook it up in the garage to wash towels, plus to have a machine similar to the one I grew up watching. I purchased an early 2000s Kenmore 80 series from a guy haul off guy, and a few weeks later purchased a Maytag Centennial- I just wanted the stainless steel tub from him. After that I found a beautiful Kenmore elite when I was just out looking and took that home only to find the tub was rusted completely and was sitting on the inner tub. But I really just wanted the cabinet wrapper. About a week ago I found a Maytag A107 for sale on marketplace. With my wife’s blessing I went and picked it up. I actually ended up purchasing this machine from its original owners. They told me it had been with them for 50 years and was their daily driver until they got a new machine. They just figured it was time to upgrade.
Have you ever worked on, repaired and/or restored any major appliances?
Yes- I took 3 whirlpool direct drives ( Maytag Centennial, Kenmore 80 series, Kenmore Elite) and built as new as I could with some modifications Kenmore Elite. I replaced the spin bearing/seals, in the tub support re-painted the tub support.Replaced the spin tube, spin clutch, transmission, tub seal, snubbers, springs/mounts, pump and agitator changed to a dual action like the one my mom had growing up. Fully cleaned the machine inside and out. Took the tub stand, skate plate, and outer tub from the Kenmore 80 series, and the stainless steel tub from the Maytag, and the console and wrapper from the Kenmore elite to make the machine I have now.
Maytag A107 ran beautifully when I got it home but after 50 years of use it desperately needed a good cleaning. Currently that machine is being carefully dissembled and inspected I will
Replace what it needs and remove/seal any rust and reassemble. The A107 is my favorite I own right now especially getting to meet the people who bought it back in 1974. I have been fighting its tub nut but I refuse to cut as I want keep its original integrity as much as possible. Other machines I have worked on my mother’s LG wave force. Belt changes on my old speed queen and my grandparents. Rebuilt a whirlpool dryer, dissembled and cleaned my mom’s old Bosch dryer. (Nexxt 800) serviced our LG front loader, — replaced main PCB, had to rewire the drain and recirculating pump Covid era machine manfaucture defects galore but I payed $300 for the machine. It has had 2 sets of dampers, and I replaced the recirculating hose because the outer tub rubs on it and the felt they put to “protect” it did not. I used car radiator tubing as a protector for the hose
