What are your dream machines yet to be found?
Id like to see a new 1964 Speed Queen washer/dryer. I know Unimatic1140 (Robert) had one hooked up in his basement - its just like the one my Mom had! Im sure it has the grey lint filter too!
Just found out that Eddy1210 has the exact washer SQ A-49 my Mom had from 1964. Spent many hours watching this machine do its thing when I was little. Our washer had the grey porcelain tub with white speckles. It had the black 3 vane agitator and lint filter that fastened to the chrome agitator cap with the metal slide on clip. We sold our house in 1970 with this washer and a Hamilton dryer. Too bad we didnt take them with us!
What are your earliest and favorite appliance memories?
My Mom had a 1964 Speed Queen washer (A-49) with a Hamilton gas dryer. It was always fun to watch the washer spin as it didnt have the device on it that stopped agitation/spinning when the lid was raised. I also remember the lint filter used to pop off the agitator a couple of times during a wash load. It was kind of annoying, but it did work! I also remember that when the SQ agitated, it would splash the water out of the tub during the wash cycle - depending on what was being washed! Jeans were always fun! After getting splashed in the face a few times I figure its time to close the lid!
What is the history of appliances you have owned?
A harvest gold Speed Queen washer and dryer from the 70s. Stainless steel was the way to go - look at all the manufacturers nowadays that offer stainless steel tubs! Speed Queen was one of the first to manufacture these but maybe not! My Moms 1964 SQ washer (A-49) had the grey porcelain tub with white speckles.

Speed Queen washer (1983) model HA7001L in almond - now this washer finally died when my partner passed away and have purchased a new electronic model in April 2016

GE Profile Dishwasher model PDW9900L00BB (2006) in black - (died)
Have you ever worked on, repaired and/or restored any major appliances?
I have replaced a motor in an old 70s Speed Queen stainless steel solid tub washer that we picked up for $50.00 from a newspaper ad. This washer was also harvest gold and somewhat different in that it had a water level control on the control panel. (Our old SQ washer had a timed water fill - which I didnt like because we didnt have good water pressure for the hot water so youd have to turn the timer dial around again to get the wash tub to fill up completely!) With a water level control I wouldnt have to babysit the washer until it started! With this $50.00 washer I found out that it didnt spin correctly since the cotter pin was sheared off of the fluid drive that caused the wash tub to spin. I replaced it with a cotter pin but tightened the belt way too tight on the motor and it finally broke the motor shaft in half. Stupid mistake! I had to purchase a new motor and installed it. It worked fine! Ive since replaced the old three vane white agitator with a new replacement and new locking cap. The old locking cap was cracked and finally broke into pieces. Ive also replaced the water pump more than once! Not a fun job on the old Speed Queens since they have three belts on the machine! My Moms 64 Speed Queen washer (A-49) went through 3 water pumps according to her. Ive replaced the felt seal around the front of the dryers when they wore out. No big job, but saved myself a ton of money doing so - under $20.00 for the part! We have since replaced all the old lead plumbing with new copper pipe all the way from the street water valve into the house and all the internal hot/cold water pipes have been replaced too! What a difference! It doesnt take hardly any time at all to fill the washers. The other plus is that you can finally take a shower while the washer or dishwasher is running with no major loss of water pressure!
