What are your dream machines yet to be found?
1965 Kenmore set to match the one my Aunt & Uncle had (model 70 series I think...) up into the 1980s. My Parents 1967(?) Kenmore set was nice too (I dont remember the model on those since we moved away in 75.) My Wife would rather have something like a new red LG front loader!
What are your earliest and favorite appliance memories?
Listening to the "woo woo woo" of my Aunts 65 Kenmore washer and looking at the lighted console and clear plastic cycle control knob! I also thought that using my Grandmothers 1973 GE mini basket "Heavy Duty 18" filter-flo washer and matching dryer were great too. I would disable the lid switch with a pencil if no one was looking to see it spin. My Parents 1984 Hotpoint filter ring W/D set were great machines that they got when I was in high school and lasted until 2010 or so. Indestructible machines.
What is the history of appliances you have owned?
The 1st washer that my Wife and I bought was a small Kenmore portable (direct drive) in 1993 for our apartment. In 1995 we bought our 1st house that had a late GE Filter-flo set (1991 I think.) They had small capacity but the ramp agitator was the best I have used. In 2000 we built our current house and purchased the machines listed above. They have been mostly trouble-free somewhat boring machines compared to the ones that I remember from the 1960s and 70s. 3/5/10 update: I just picked up a 1961 Maytag A700!
Have you ever worked on, repaired and/or restored any major appliances?
I have changed a coupler in our KitchenAid washer (sold in 2007), fixed a loose ground causing the computer board in our Whirlpool range to freak out and have changed a couple of belts on GE/Hotpoint filter-flo machines. I have also touched up the paint on some W/D sets but nothing major. I also do most of the work on our cars as a hobby. 3/5/10 update: I will be restoring my "new" 1961 Maytag A700! Work is underway.
