What are your earliest and favorite appliance memories?
As a child I remember my grandmother praising her Maytag wringer washer.
My grandmother’s neighbor’s brother-in-law had the local Maytag franchise in my PA hometown. I was surrounded by Maytags. I was infatuated.
As a child I spent many a summer day peering into basement windows watching the homemaker do the laundry. All I needed to see was laundry on a clothesline and I made a b-line to the basement window. Many laughed at this but some let me in, gave me milk and cookies, sat me on the basement stair and let me watch. One neighbor told me it was rude to look into people’s basement windows and promptly scolded me. (I found this odd since no one else took offence at my peeping-tom approach. It was small consolation when this woman was later institutionalized).
What is the history of appliances you have owned?
Bought my first set of second hand Maytag Center Dials in 1990.(A606&DG608)
No longer have these.
Started my vintage collection in 2005 after visiting this site. Begun the process of converting 1/2 of our basement into a "washer basement", which was completed in 2008. Have 4 vintage sets and misc washers.
Have you ever worked on, repaired and/or restored any major appliances?
In 1995 bought a 1936 Maytag Wringer Model N10 for the purpose of restoration, which has been completed. Model 32 wringer awaiting restoration.
