Where to start...Two older "real Maytag" auto washers, one in use, one for parts or repair, one Maytag wringer to restore and a a third Maytag automatic with the light up back glass and the matching wide body gas dryer with the filter in the back of the drum. These will be restored or restified and put in use in a high profile spot in the house....until something of greater nift finds its way home. A couple of post war gas stoves, one unknown brand and one magic chef, also destined for mainline use. An unrestored and still working early 50s GE fridge and an older westinghouse chest freezer that worked when brought home and needs resto too. The rest are 70s - 80s in use for now. Going slightly off topic, I also have a star dial coke machine, a vintage tube tester like used to be in every hardware and appliance shop and a 1954 Chrysler 331 Hemi on a stand in the den in need of a body to live again....and two 1976 harley XLs. What can I say. I like vintage, I like mechanical, I like tube electronics and good old American technology.
What are your dream machines yet to be found?
That list is too long to type. Depends on what day it is. Maybe one of those washer /dryers that plays "How dry I am"...Or two.... Something with a suds saver, maybe?
What are your earliest and favorite appliance memories?
Old round cornered refrigerators with chrome trim, contour lines and big heavy latches. Old calculator gas pumps with spinners, chrome trim and streamline moderne or skyscraper styling. Great Grandma using her old wringer washer on the back porch at 80 years old. My Aunts automatic washer with the plunger type adjatator. I dont recall the brand. Massive, sleek, rounded 40s - early 50s gas stoves. old coke machines, analog pinball machines even mirror backed cigarette machines and just about anything with a mechanical, deco or space age look about it.
What is the history of appliances you have owned?
My pair of matags were take outs put on display in a dealers shop. After many years, they were unceramoniously discarded. It was hinted that Maytags new corporate owner didnt like them hanging around. It made the new stuff seem unreliable. My 50s fridge was dropped off in a white goods collection pile at another dealers store. I took it home, plugged it in and it worked. I removed the wood grain contact paper with a heat gun, hit it with prep clean and shot it with rattle can appliance white. That was in 2000. its still going strong.
Have you ever worked on, repaired and/or restored any major appliances?
worked on, repaired, and a little paint. No total resto yet.
