I no longer have room literally and figuratively for extra appliances
What are your earliest and favorite appliance memories?
I was fascinated by hand irons as a youngster and remember when I was four years old, watching my mother iron and going over to the iron when she had to leave the room. I still like hand irons.
What is the history of appliances you have owned?
I have since given this 1928 Maytag Model 90 wringer to a neighbor, but I always liked the story, not just because of the story, but because of my fondness for the great family friend who told it.
Ann Uhler had seven brothers and sisters and she was tired of helping her mother wash clothes with a contraption that had a wooden handle that had to be pushed back and forth. She had been hired by Standard Oil in Bakersfield, California, and was walking home from work one day when she saw the Maytag wringer in appliance store showroom window. There was a sign proclaiming that it could be bought on time -- for so much a week. She marched right in and made the deal -- and was so proud of herself for 1) having a job and money to do this for her mother. She used that wringer until 1954, and then kept it in her garage until 1961 when she gave it to me. I kept it until 2005 when I gave it to Frank Dalcerri.
Have you ever worked on, repaired and/or restored any major appliances?
I like to tinker on small appliances and clean large appliances.
