    Whirlpool Washer Rant!

WOW!!! Only $1425 for a washing machine with plastic gears inside a tin transmission... where do I sign up? Is this a fast-forward to 2045?

    Whirlpool Washer Rant!

A good powder coat finish can last nearly as long as porcelain and won't chip as easily. SQ makes pretty much anything about as well as possible.

    Help Me Pick a Washer!

A new machine for "just a little more" from any brand will be a 3-5 year life span piece of garbage. Of course, you can't be certain a 20 year old machine will last, but it's something that can be repaired and used for longer than any new machine would survive.

    Whirlpool Washer Rant!

I'm looking forward to hooking up my SQ front load stack. It's a model specifically intended for Commercial use, the documentation actually states "not to be installed in a residence". Picked it up in pristine condition for $500, looks to have been used very lightly. Of course it weighs as...

I usually do these in a comment but this time I’m doing it in a post

When I was in the business uh... close to 40 years ago, I got in a couple Maytags from the late 1950's. Still working like new. They'd have been relative babes, only 30 or so years old at the time. Sure wish I'd have kept some of that stuff!

    Got in multiple machines today

I had a GE with bad suspension rods, a new set was more than half what the machine cost new. We lifted the springs and bottom washers about an inch and a quarter, and put a bead of weld around the rods to move the washers up from their original spots. Used it for a year or so and sold it to a...

Almost brand new Whirlpool washer with bad control board

One that switches on the drain motor might just have a welded contact in a relay. If you ohm it out and it's stuck, it's usually not a really tough job to find a replacement on Amazon for a few bucks and replace it. Then you'll have a spare for a non-warranty fix down the road.

    Using Washer After 40 Years

Ooh... a "Skinny Mini" with the dry clutches and the "boy scout" transmission! Ingenious design that could have worked very well if they hadn't been overloaded so regularly.

When did Maytag start to go bad?

Whirlpool, once a peer of Maytag and building nearly as good equipment, has systematically destroyed most of the brands we knew. They own nearly all the remaining US brands apart from Speed Queen and Frigidaire, you get more or less the same guts no matter what the sticker on top says. Part of...
