What are your earliest and favorite appliance memories?
In the early 60's our family lived in a 3-flat apartment building. The basement looked like a washing machine showroom. All the ladies had their wringer washers along with their automatics. My mom had a speed queen wringer washer and a Lady kenmore automatic. Her friend had a maytag wringer and a frigidaire automatic. The other tennant had her norge wringer washer and the westinghouse laundromat. From what I can remember, the automatics were all mid to late 1950's models. All the ladies gathered in the basement Saturday morning to do laundry (and gossip too). I always went with mom and just loved watching all the machines in action. All of the husbands in the building worked in the steel mills, so the ladies used their wringer washers for work clothes. On occasion, I would get to feed something through the wringer (but not very often). Most of my time was divided between watching the clothes splashing about in the westinghouse or watching the frigidaire's pulsator bob up and down.

Ironicly, nobody owned a clothes dryer. They all hung the clothes out to dry in the yard. However, when the weather was bad or in the winter, we walked around the corner to the laundromat where the ladies used the big dryers. By the way, this laundromat only used westinghouse coin-op front loaders. Not a top loader in sight.

As if that wasn't enough to satisfy my washing machine fascination, directly across the alley was the back door to a washer/dryer appliance dealer and repair shop. I remember the young repairman that worked in the shop. His name was Greg. He would let me come into the shop and watch him work. On occasion, I got to go with him on a service call to the laundromat around the corner.
