What are your dream machines yet to be found?
1959-65 bottom mount GE Combination refrigerator with swing-out shelves (or I might settle for an older non-Frost Guard model in good condition).
What are your earliest and favorite appliance memories?
The sound of our 49 Westinghouse refrigerator kicking in.
The intoxicating aroma of rotisserie chicken roasting in the (dearly departed) Roto-Broil.
Moms 56 Norge washer (the agitator) and 56 Timeline dryer.
My favorite aunts 1950-ish Westy slantfront pair, another aunts 1961 top mount Frigidaire frostless refrigerator in chiffon yellow, the 1963-ish turquoise Westinghouse Spacemate FL pair in the neighbors laundry room. The KDS-15 in another neighbors kitchen, and the KDS-16 in the new kitchen of the people next door to them.
What is the history of appliances you have owned?
A 1949 Westinghouse range (now living with Greg "oldhouseman" in Sparta, GA) is the one my parents bought when they got married in 1949. It was used by my mom until she couldnt cook for herself anymore (2006) and she never owned another stove. Sold off a few of my old appliances at the estate sale we had at Moms place in July of 2008. The stove did not sell so it was shipped to Greg who is now enjoying it hopefully for many more years of reliable service. 1939 Westinghouse refrigerator, small, maybe 4.0 cf, which abruptly stopped running after nearly 70 years in continuous operation. A couple of GE Monitor Tops. 1950 Westinghouse Laundromat washer. A basket case needing total restoration but it still worked.
Had a close encounter with an 85 Thermador THD3600 stainless steel dishwasher for exactly a year before giving it the boot.
1955 Roto-Broil rotisserie
2008 Frigidaire Affinity FL W/D set
1990 ISE Classic Supreme dishwasher (2)
A few 70s/80s vintage mini fridges
Have you ever worked on, repaired and/or restored any major appliances?
Tinkered with the 1939 Westy frig and my 1950 Laundromat and have repaired many a loose wire to the burner coils on the 1949 stove, Changed the belt and pump on Moms 1974 Kenmore washer with Quiet Pak and in early 2010 tackled a 1985 Thermador THD 3600 dishwasher with fellow member Nate (roto204) to fix leaks, replace parts and make it my daily driver. I had had enough of its quirkiness after a year.
Major clean-up operation on a neglected 1957 GE Combination refrigerator and deployed it as drinks/beer fridge in place of a 1970 Whirlpool, which was passed along to a family member for their drinks and beer. Changed out the cold control on the Combination with an aftermarket universal fit replacement from Modern Parts.
Pulled parts from a KDS20 donor machine to prepare my In-Sink-Erator Classic Supreme dishwasher for regular service, but I replaced the ISE with a Miele after a couple of years.
