What are your dream machines yet to be found?
Late 40s Bendix front loader, square deco cabinet. [Found it!] And, of course, any model GM Frigidaire pulsating washer - up to and including Multimatic. I had the good fortune to use one in at a rented flat in the mid-60s. It was a late 50s model, as I can tell from Roberts display of various agitator caps. Did a good job of tangling pants legs with twin sheets, and went out of balance if you looked at it wrong, but it was such fun to watch!
What are your earliest and favorite appliance memories?
Watching the old Bendix front loader on its big concrete pedestal in the basement of my childhood home in Connecticut.
When we moved to San Francisco, one of the flats we rented in the mid-60s had a GM Frigidaire - Probably a 58. It had the green rubber "Three Ring Agitator" center cap. I remember being entranced by the wash action on that machine, even though it did seem to like to create very tangled results with the mixed loads of twin bed sheets, shirts, slacks, and underwear that I would wash on my own. I even remember the loading advice in the owners manual that accompanied the machine, and tried to follow it, but it didnt seem to make much difference. The machine also seemed to go off balance very easily, and more often than not Id come down to use it and would have to restart the machine that had stopped due to imbalance with someone elses load. The landlord said the imbalance issue is why his wife rejected the machine which was her loss and our gain ;). Of course Id stay and watch my entire cycle. But it was a cool machine. Turquoise, as I recall, too. Unfortunately we were only in that flat for a year, and after that, it was back to the Speed Queens at the local laundromat.
