P&G released Downy in 1960. However prior to that event fabric softeners/conditioners had long been available to commercial/industrial laundries. There likely were some sort of product already on market for domestic use before P&G's Downy arrived, otherwise where would Hotpoint get that "WonderRinse" solution.

A.E. Staley had Sta-Puf fabric "rinse" softener on market early as 1954

When detergents began largely replacing soap on wash day it brought many benefits. However you lost that natural side effect from using soap; a bit of it always remains which leaves things soft and or fluffy. Soap and early fabric softeners had one thing in common; tallow and other fats are used to create.

White King, Ivory Snow and other soap products touted they left laundry softer than detergents.

A.E. Staley was owned by Corn Products Co., according to a neighbor of ours who represented them and I loved the fragrance of it, but unless mom had a coupon or similar, she bought the cheaper Texize Laundry Fluff. A neighbor who had a Laundromat would add that thick, blue product Nu Soft to the last rinse. I wondered if the thin, pink softeners made some use of a corn by product for softening. Years later, a friend introduced me to the original fragrance Final Touch softener.

There have been many a time I have longed for this simpler, thinner, subtle scent compared to today's products. WE didn't have anny clogging issues with the thin pink stuff compared to when thicker products such as Downey or Final Touch.

Pre-Downey

Economics Labs, makers of Electrasol & Finish dishwasher detergents, as well as a host of commercial detergents, introduced Rinse Rite for the Hotpoint Wonderinse units in the late 50's. Like many dishwasher detergents, it was sold through appliance dealers. Retail price 89 cents = $8.58 today.

Final Touch

Laundress, I loved final touch. Nice crisp scent and didn't feel as waxy as downy.
Would love to see that make a comeback. The name was brought back but the product didn't behave like the original. :-(
