small problem in pump

found the wash arm support (top half of pump) to have a problem. the top spindel had slid down the shaft and would block any water from getting into the hydrosweep. this was due that the pin came out of it, holding it in it's proper place on the shaft.

i will fix it later, put a new wash arm support i found on e bay on it for now.

it should be like this

that's better, only it won't stay that way for long. so a new top went on, mr. kdss-17a was brought into the house, hooked up under my sink counter and has been purring away ever since. so far everything is working great and it's extremely quiet!!!!

will post more pics of it in the kitchen at a later time. i am in process of installing a total of 6 dishwashers in my kitchen, all operational, all kitchenaids. there will be the kdss-17a, a kd-12, kd-15, kd-16, kds-17a, and a kd-5 top loader portable. what can i say, i love em!!!!!!!

yea i lucked out on this one!

nice guy from boston saw my post on craigs list about buying kds-17's, he contacted me and i have been trying to arrange shipping at a reasonable rate ever since. thanks to "dishwasher crazy" here on the site i hooked up with "U-CRATE IT" and they delivered it today from boston to cincinnati for 247.00 bucks! not bad! i am a proud daddy, maybe i should pass out cigars! or better yet, gel packs of cascade!

This is like a dream machine!

The equivalent would be a reverse rack Maytag with a stainless steel tub.

Great catch. If they could still make these today!
Who cares about Energy Star rating!! ;-)

Aferim!

OMG! What a beautiful machine! and so rare! We used to have a Hobart undercounter at work that had the same tub and door as the Superba along with the punch-outs for the detergent dispenser and the rinse dispensers; I kept thinking about stealing the thing and Frankensteining it with our KitchenAid parts to make one of these. Nothing prettier than that blue vinyl on stainless.

kdss-17a

this is the 2nd time i have had to replace a wash arm support. first was on a kds-19 i bought off e bay several years back. wash arm supports are being sold on e bay for 15 bucks each right now, i just bought a couple more.

energy star? that's a kiss of death to a dishwasher in my opinion! let the water flow freely!!!!

i will be posting more pics of this beautiful machine including the front control panel. when i got it yesterday it came with a white door panel but the kdi-16 i got off e bay several weeks ago (also for 15 bucks) came with a stainless panel. so i switched them, at least for now. i figure a stainless tub deserves a stainless door panel to match!

Beautiful machine, thanks so much for sharing it with us. Be sure and get some pictures when you get it all installed.

Thanks for the memories!

Peter,
You have yourself one fine dishwasher there which will probably outlast nearly anything else on the planet!
Reminds me of the KDSS-16 I picked up once at the curb. Saw it as I drove by, went around the corner and it was in my trunk in seconds. I didn't care that a repairman had taken the motor stator for the copper and the fill valve. I had plenty of spares even back in the 80's when I found it!

Threw it back together and yanked out the KDS15 and upgraded my mom's machine in no time flat!
She was always the test lab for machines I found and tinkered with. She always said that after the 15, she never kept a machine longer than 6 months! (actually not true)

The only problem the machine had was the sani rinse tstat was always closed so it never really delayed to heat the water so I changed it and it worked perfectly for years. Sold it for $125 bucks to a friend and she had it until 2000, when she bought a KUDS24 machine and she tossed it out running! I wish she had called me first!

Those stainless tanks even without any insualtion are much quieter than their porcelain counterparts but I would strongly suggest you get some DynaMat for it or see if you can get some bituminous sheeting to coat the tank with to really quiet it down and insulate it. They may use alot of water but you can save some kilowatts if you insulate the tank.

Also, I see that there was a serious leak of water into the blower housing. Probably caused by an off level machine making water flow back into the dryer. And why is the white neutral wire disconnected from the blower motor? Maybe something shorted out? Check it before you install it and save the hassle of pulling it out!

I guarantee you when and if you do install it, it will be the conversation piece of your kitchen.
I would love to find a stainless steel 18 series but the pickings are few and far between here in the sunshine state!

Good luck with it. A Superb(a) find!
