Not when it's used right. Mine have never looked like that.

And lets not forget to combine it all together! The tub holes were actually totally clogged with that crap.

I've decided after working on this washer today that I am going to switch to COLD water washing, ECO detergent and NO bleach! I want my clothes to smell like last months gym socks combined with dark damp basement smells which feels like the rag the mechanic uses! This IS the way of the future!!

If I remember correctly the light will stay on the entire cycle and turn off at the end. It even stays on when the lid is opened after the cycle is complete for a period of time. I don't remember how long though.
