Many Miele's needed to run through an initial wash (no laundry, detergent or bleach) to add water to the pump float. See page 8 of the manual I linked to for all the gory details. The shipping strut reminder is just a Yes No option or at least should be.

@passatdoc Generally you need more HE detergent. Some brands it's a lot more others it's a little over 30% more. The older Gain HE powder was in the 35% more (normal soiling) 65% more (heavy soiling) for top loaders when I used it in 2009. No idea now.
