I didn't remove mine and there was no damage done inside the drum. I was confident it was going to work after using the washer many times before. Still better than washing them by hand or buying replacement outer bags.

This is why I use only white bath towels and wear alot of white clothes, so I can use hot water and bleach to help prevent any smells inside the washer. Regardless of what, I think these should still be serviced and deep cleaned every 5-10 years.
