They just don’t build things well anymore

"Love that air-conditioner!!" Me too! We have a ca. 1995 Whirlpool 12k btu still in the box that we used just 2 years in MD, USA made, weighs a ton and all metal, wonder if it's as good as that 1962 Coldspot? Shoulda used the 1:18 instead of that lil' German thing! LOL

    "Smart car"...

oh and btw: Engineering is the application of the Laws of Physics. Within the parameters of weight and structure a vehicle can be made only so safe: P = M x V... momentum P is directly proportional to the object's mass (M) and velocity (V). Engineering can't change collision V, but M varies...

    "Smart car"...

"No car ever built was repairable in a 30 mph collision into a solid object." Likely true, but I don't care about the car. Instrumented testing has demonstrated that you might well survive in the right vehicle, but that category would not include a "Smart" car. As always YMMV, drive what you...

    "Smart car"...

Alas, those pesky facts are an inconvenient thing... "we don't hear "stories" about people dropping dead and the car being pulled from the market." just what is your data base for that statement? Here's the inconvenient truth...

...not so Smart... you'd have to be suicidal to drive one of these ridiculous "cars"... the Laws of Physics have yet to be repealed. If fuel economy is one's prime directive an electric or hybrid will be far safer and get better "mpg".

rare 1961 GE range lives on... thanks guys!

Well our rare "red" '61 GE range at camp is back in the "pink"! ... everything works now thanks to parts and help from PhilR and John L combo52! The malfunctioning Sensi-Temp selectable-size FL burner has been replaced by a standard 8", the sliding control by a regular 5-temp range button...

Electric Cars are now Biting into Gasoline Sales

well as Hans said... it's coming, deal with it. I for one can 't wait to reduce auto maintenance expense by an average of 40% and get a fuel economy equivalent to 130mpg in a clean and quiet electric vehicle.

new and vintage 18" compact dishwashers

thanks all... "I'd call that more of a tragedy." LOL! If its turns out to be a timer will do John. It's had light use and we do prefer to repair over replace. I think the advice to get the cheapest new is good, we don't need bells & whistles. German stuff is just a pain for parts and repair...

Let's hope appliance makers aren't contemplating something like this.

who cares... don't need those BS features nor a new car., the five 1969 - 2011 cars we have now can last us the rest of our lives if necessary, so screw those greedy bastards. We've done just fine in almost 60 years of driving without it, it's those who just have to have all the latest tech...

Electric Cars are now Biting into Gasoline Sales

most people... have more the one car, so it makes sense to have an EV for short trips, which comprises 80-90% of most people's driving, and an IC vehicle for trips if long range is a factor. That's our plan, as soon as Toyota makes the type of EV we want.

new and vintage 18" compact dishwashers

We may be looking at having to replace the 18" GE compact dishwasher at our summer camp. Like the 18" Frigidaire at home it's made in China, however with a mechanical timer, the one at home is processor controlled, otherwise construction seems to be the same. The problem seems to be with the...

Vintage Kitchenaid Dishwasher Fully Functional $200 Listed 6 days ago in Mattoon, IL

we have... this exact same machine, and also had one from new 1974 to 1989 in our first house. One of KAs best, never a problem, with 5 people in the house used daily, and a great washer with only minimal attention is paid to loading the "one armed wonder".

modern choices... we thought about a new Bosch but the local dealer who sells them as well as KA/WP syas he's had major issues getting parts for machines more than a couple years old and they have considerably more problems than some other machines. It was true for our son's M-I-L, nothing but...

    RWD Fiats: 124, 131 ~ 1966-83...

'70s Fiats... were a blast to drive, we had a '71 850 Spider, my B-I-L had a '77? Brava wagon, and for years I lusted after a '71 124 coupe and drove one once. They were the poor man's Alfa (we had a '66 Duetto once also). Great cars, but sadly they all rusted at the drop of a hat, especially...
