Thanks all for the replies, I'm quite surprised how many of you did! On the play "The Steamie", I do have that too, and my on/off b/f is from Glasgow (Pollok) and he can just remember the steamies being around in the early 80's. In my home city, there were alot of these wash houses, and I have...

    Public wash house.

Lol. I was born in 1979 too. My mum and my nanna used to and still say they prefer to wash in a twin tub cos things come out cleaner, and I agree. Dunno about washing in a wash house though. Still grim up north ya know lol, mind you when I lived in London, alot of people didn't have washers...

What Was the first vintage washer you remember seeing or started up as a child

First machine I ever started up and used? Hmmm. My mum had a Colston Concorde, but I never remember using that, but she did get a second hand auto (we all did up north in 80's Thatcher's Britain)and I can't remember the model, but it was an Indesit, 450rpm, controls and soap despenser on the...

1983! Making me feel old lol. Mind you it was around that time my mum used it, I was only around 5 yr old at the time, but I think Allbrite went on into the 90's. It was one of those blue wash powders, and it worked wonders. Drive I can remember vaguely, and Radion, eurgh!!! The first smell was...

    Any UK members recognise this?

LMAO @ dinette! My nanna used say that! I can't believe anyone would wanna get rid of their 60's Hotpoint. Mind you, the last type of Hotpoint twin tubs are quite easy to get hold of, I think it's Hoovermatics that are getting rare, and even when you do get them, they tend to be the T5090 types...

    Spin-Drain!

Yeah I saw that Philips spin-drain washer a few days ago on Youtube. Reminds me of the old Allander (Creda I think) washer, for looks. I remember when Philips teamed up with Whirlpool in the 90's and built an auto, although didn't have spin-drain, it had a very "non nonsense" action, and...

    Spin-Drain!

Rolls/Colston/Ariston Someone mentioned earlier if anyone had seen a Rolls twin tub. Well, I haven't but my mum and bubbie used to have a Colston, and this is the nearest on Youtube I can think of. Great machine though.

    Spin-Drain!

How efficient is this machine? Still a lot of launderettes in my home city, that have spin-drain machines. Made by Zanussi and badged as REX. Was the Indesit brand mixed with these other makes?
