    Console stereos: 1958-84

A while back junked a crap-ola 1973 era console and kept the "made in England" Glenburn AT100 changer: plastic platter "consumer grade" and about equivilent to a BSR,except odd narrow cartridge. Not checked out-might put it to use if passes a test run.

#32,My 18" Danby is a toy dishwasher-but it washes dishes pretty good :) My '84 Maytag belt drive is a REAL dishwasher...

    Console stereos: 1958-84

Very cool-the tuning tube is nicely presented in the design and the CD frequency markings on the AM dial sit era correct :) Original drivers?,ALNICO magnets ?

    Console stereos: 1958-84

Cool on the confirmation of the Germanium transistor problem-that brings to mind the small Japanese transistors that get noisy and otherwize "funny" in Japanese equipnent especially around 1972-75 era, certain type #s(that i do not recall) especially known for this. Then there is that yellowish...

    Console stereos: 1958-84

I think that big Motorola console mentioned might have been an X-300: found pic of amp chassis-Transformer and filter caps not big enough for a real 150 watts...a couple press-in rectifier diodes on a heatsink had 6618 date codes, could not see the transistors.Woofers were in sealed enclosures...

    Console stereos: 1958-84

that late model Zenith console was in the back room of a swap shop-i returned with a nutdriver and flashlight to peek inside-cassette motor had 1984 date(possibly changed i suppose) and typical early '80s Taiwan components-a few years ago tried to find out when the last Zenith console was made...

    Console stereos: 1958-84

Since we are nicely warmed up on vintage stereo equipment might as well discuss these too: Some of these could be quite high quality and amps over 100w :) Earlier ones,pre~1965,only the phono was stereo. These consoles were common into the late '70s and the newest one i have encountered Was a...

    Combo stereos 1969-84

Looks like that one is from around 1980-ish,probably Taiwan made and looks decent enough.

    Combo stereos 1969-84

That is repairable, but will be quite a project-these do seem to lose their original speakers quite often, but just about any speakers around 8 ohms will work ok. Poor sound could have several causes-degraded capacitors high on the list, and there are other causes including transistors that have...

OK, test motor sitting here- right side of stationary switch,3 terminals:Blue from washer connect to BU.White to W. Orange to OR. Left side of stationary switch: black jumper wire connected to capacitor connects to BK.Red wire on other side of capacitor goes into motor winding.Violet wire from...

    Combo stereos 1969-84

I thought about trying LEDs in that Sanyo, but looking at other receivers converted to LED,usually too bright and gaudy-does cut out several watts of heat though. The dial of the Sanyo is supposed to light up warm white with a clear plastic light guide around the festoon bulbs evening out the...

    Combo stereos 1969-84

#9,That '82 Fisher tuner sure did look "Sanyo"inside and did have a few broken solder joints... Speaking of Sanyo,I have a big Sanyo receiver from 1978 they built to get on the prime era bandwagon: it has those big black amp modules :) The transformer is quite large,so probably has some...

    Combo stereos 1969-84

Just discovered Crosley makes a retro '70s looking replica of one of these ! : 1975T,~$230. I'd love to poo-poo the hell out of this beyond BPC crap, but probably sounds better than the smartphones everybody uses as a jukebox these days :)

    Combo stereos 1969-84

That Fisher was probably pretty decent -I think that brand was considered one of the better ones in the early 1960s HiFI FM early days and a 1982 Fisher tuner i have is pretty good(made in Japan by then) I have 7 combos -best one is a 1974 Panasonic that has brands own turntable that has 4-pole...

    Combo stereos 1969-84

those "all in ones" that featured AM/FM,phono,and often a tape player or two and seperate speakers. Earliest ones noticed were from about 1969,latest from around 1984 as "BPC"-black plastic crap era was getting underway...lots of cheapo to mid -grade offerings usually from Japan, sometimes US...

    The Home Entertainment Industry

Before the Dual 1229 i had an Empire turntable of about the same vintage as the dual-a heavy 1950s basic design with a German external rotor motor belt driving the platter. Bought this one in near mint condition at a stereo store table sale in 1989 for $40: i think they thought it was a relic of...
