    Consumer Reports

You asked about appliances I subscribe to Consumer Reports Magazine and have for about 20 years. I also read it in the 1960's because my roomnate had it. I may not buy the appliance because of the rating but I do like to see how well the various brands hold up. Speed Queen was usually well...

    Sears bankruptcy looming

Saved for the time being Sears has been given a reprieve. They will keep 425 stores open for now. Said to close three per month for the next few years. Hard to see how they can keep appliances in stock with so few stores. Of course Whirlpool quit supplying their brands a while ago. Many...

Party Line Telephone Service - Tell Me Why

In Martinez I grew up in Martinez California and our next door neighbor had a party line. My mom explained how it worked. At the time we had no dial but operators who asked "number please" when you lifted the phone receiver. If we had this system today no one would be surprised because...

In the area you grew up what brands were popular

Maytag, Bencix, Signature, Frigidaire Our local furniture store, Martinez Furniture sold Bendix, and we had a Bendix washer and dryer. The Bendix washer was in our home from 1945 until 1965. Another local seller was Milt's Appliance and they sold Maytag, so a lot of Martinez residents had...

Vintage stainless Hotpoint appliance package $1500 (Waterville, MN)

Same handles I have the same handles in copper color. One thing about these kitchens, the cabinets are not individual boxes. A whole row was built as a unit, could be 10 feet long. Really quality construction. Usually on HGTV when I see a kitchen like mine or this one, the narrator will...

    1-18 Day

When I had Three I had 3 of them in 2007. One I got from Sactoteddybear and it leaked. I got the next one from craigslist in San Jose and the timer did not work. The third I found here in Sacramento and everything worked. I gave the other two to Sactoteddybear and thought he could fix...

    New Dishwasher Suggestions

Good reviews I have seen really good reviews on AW of Kitchen Aid, Bosch and now Maytag. The only negative I have seen of Maytag Dishwashers on Home Depot reviews is the racks. Some have said they are flimsy. I sure like the disposer aspect of the Maytags, the idea of a filter that needs...

    Sears bankruptcy looming

Another delay The bankruptcy court was supposed to decide yesterday, Friday Jan. 4, if they would accept the latest bid from Eddie lambert, or liquidate the entire company. The court decided to wait until Tuesday, Jan. 8. I am following this saga day by day, expecting them to liquidate...

Last big purchase of 2018 - a new dishwasher

Condensing Dry System I believe some if not all Bosch Dishwashers use Condensing Dry, with no added heat. Extra dry uses hotter water. Some reviews state that water remains in the bottom. Should be pumped out after dry cycle. Have you or others had a problem with this? I plan on the lower...

    New Toy

IRS Those T-Birds have an independent rear suspension. Fairly sophisticated chassis. I had a 1990 Mercury Cougar based on the same chassis. Very nice driving cars. Even the Mustang didn't have independent rear suspension until the 2015 model.

    Found a 1974 Ward's Signature Washer/Dryer set in Avocado!

Very Handsome set Thank you for the presentation. This is a very handsome looking set and the condition is really hard to believe. Did they go to the laundramat? Very good find of the Montgomery Ward brand.

Any Cookie Curators to discuss extinct Stella D'oros of yore?

Nabisco Famous Cookies I still buy Stell Doro Cookies and they pretty much taste the same. I used to buy Nabisco Famous Cookie assortment and it is no longer available, probably for 15 years. I loved those cookies. Some of the cookies in the assortment are still available such as Lorna...

    Number PULEAZE! Part One:

Model 300 In Martinez, CA we had the Western Electric Model 300 with no dial. We had operators until the late 1950's when Pacific Bell came to the house and added a dial to that same phone. We had an additional extension installed at the same time. That phone was there for decades. When...

    Life (partially) Without Dish Network

you can have locals from an antenna One thing Dish has always done is have local channels optional. You can have an antenna and the Dish receiver will add those channels into your lineup. You can record locals just like other channels. I have Dish Smart Pack and local pack because I have an...

    Home Remedys

Gatorade I had something like this about a month ago. Only lasted 2 days but was miserable. I had some Gatorade here and drank that. Also BRAT diet can help. Banana Rice Applesauce and Toast. Just real mild foods. This can be a virus and is contagious. I added back my real diet of basic...

    bendix diving bell washer

My Mom My mom kept using hers at least until 1964. From 1944 to 1964 pretty good service. My dad replaced the bearings at least once. Served a family of 6. Most loads were hung out to dry so poor extraction was not that important. Still it seemed the clothes were fairly dry to the touch...

    My speed queen TR5 washing.

Good detergent To get clothes clean in one of the new Speed Queen machines you really need to use a good detergent. Liquid Tide with Bleach would be the minimum. Because a good detergent will work with very little agitation. Should get a coffee stain out. I guess I was lucky to get a 2017 SQ.

Historic photograph - appliance dept. at K-mart showing Frigidaires

Tore it down They tore down our local Howe Avenue Kmart about 10 years ago and replaced it with a Home Depot. I think it was an original Kmart, and pretty much was worn out. I kind of miss it. I too, never saw appliances in a Kmart. I don't think there was one in San Francisco in 1970 when...

Permanent water conservation rules for Californians "per person per" day

San Francisco Drought I do remember living through the drought in 1986, I believe, in San Francisco. I owned a two unit home and there were 4 people living there. We did no outside watering at all. So the City cut every residence by a fixed percentage, maybe 25%. We had no way to meet this...

Permanent water conservation rules for Californians "per person per" day

100 gallons per day We have cut back our water usage but still use about 100 gallons a day per person in the winter. As far as I know there are no leaks. We have 2.5 gallons per minute shower heads, the new standard is 1.8. Our toilets are from the last Century but we do not always flush...
