Vintage GE "Carry Cool" AC Anyone?

You can find the EER of any window/through wall a/c unit easy: It's just BTUs divided by watts of power drawn. You used to see a lot of those carry cools by me years ago. They always looked like a radio stuck through the window :) Older ones, after a few years of use, would start turning a...

    Anyone know anything about radios?

The FM bands are listed in "channel" numbers, which was a fad for FM for a while. I'm guessing the top band is the current FM band, the lower is the old FM band. That makes it a pretty rare set - I read somewhere that pretty soon after dual band FM sets popped up, the FCC outlawed them (!). RCA...

    dehumidifiers

Yeah, my parents tossed their old Coldspot for a 'White Westinghouse' years ago. Man, that thing's noisy as heck. One thing I DID do was run a hose to it so it drains outside without any intervention. If you've NOT done that, it's a really nice thing to have. But yeah, at night, when I'm over...

Things I'm old enough to remember first-hand

CD player comming out. Chrenobyl. Challenger going *boom*. Gorby :) NYC Subway grafitti. When only Hells Angels had Harleys, and choppers were seldom seen. 707s into JFK, and occasionally Cove Neck. The LIRR's old diesel fleet. PCC trolley cars in Newark. VW Bugs everywhere. Atari. Colecovision...

Help! Vintage Sears A/C fan weak/inoperative!

I wouldn't condem the motor just yet. I've got my money on the start capacitor. Pull the motor out, anyway, clean the shaft/bearings/wipe it off. And find the start capacitor, and go buy a new one - it has to be the same ratings. Once you hook it up, I bet the motor starts and runs beautifully...

    Disposers

When I lived in Hartford, my apartment had a disposal. Being a college kid, and, frankly, never even seen one of these things before, pretty much everything went down that hole. Wow, I didn't kow they could shake counter tops. Also found where the reset button was on it :)

PK did some one here record this or? Singing Fisher and Pykel

Yeah, if the microcontroller's got good enough contro over the noise feeper, they can do that... My favorite trick was still the video of a Siemens ICE train playing the German national anthem *through the train's traction inverters* Sounded weird but neat. Some of OBB's locomotives do musical...

CONVENTIONAL WASHING: A STUDY IN TEXT AND PHOTOS

Whatever is the studded top on the Kenmore's agitator for? Or was that a Freudian thing that managed to get by management?

    Rock-Ola Question

Ouch. Try calling up one of the better jukebox supply houses? Oh yeah, you could get the manual for your machine from Victory Glass, that'd probbably show how it all hooks up, or give you an idea...

    Let's Talk About Clutches

BTW, those of you with industrial-type jobs, McMaster-Carr sells (among everything else) 'friction matrial' for brakes/clutches. You get it in sheet form in various types. Thicknesses of 3/16 and up, only, though, in strip form, though the more pricey sheets come in 1/8th. In any case, if...

Ya got to kiss a lot of frog(eyes)...

Ok, unless 'the works', i.e. the transmission and all aren't jammed up, I'm wondering if the start switch on the motor could be messed up? I'm guessing these HAVE them. If they hang up or don't close, etc, the motor might not have enough punch to start, or overheat. If it's got a start switch...

How To Repair A "Vintage" Air Conditioner

EERs on A/C units used to be selling points, since some were 7, some were 8, some were 10, some were 11. Then the Feds mandated a minimum of 8 or so, and now it's hard to find a unit that's more than 10, even though I recall seeing mid and even high 11's years ago. The Chinese units sold at wal...

That's got the 2nd version selection reciever without the 2D21 tubes in it, right?

Lincoln and Buick update - off topic

My friend's got a '76 Ford Country Squire wagon - full size. They sure mean it, too. It's *huge*. Anyway, it has the hydrualic boost on the brakes, too. And 4 wheel discs - factory! 460/C6/9 inch. That's a fun transmission to rebuild, BTW. It's bigger than a THM-400! His friend had a Lincolin...

Having a look at an old shop

Califones were popular as heck with schools. Good sound, teacher-proof, and they worked. I remember that even in the late 80's, there were plenty of tube ones still kicking around my school. Oh heck, there were tube ones kicking around after that, too. Of course, my district 'modernized' by...

    exhaust fans revisited

Yeah, Sears sold TONS of those Homart units and you STILL see them peeking out attic windows all over the place. They came in a few varieties: Fan with little on off switch. Fan with timer Reverseable fan Reverseable fan with timer. Some had buttons, some had a knob. I guess they changed 'em...

we need to preserve antique electric motors

Oh yeah, those old AC motors will run *forever*. I know places with 50 year old ones in daily use.

The Harvest Gold Ge Filter Flo has sprung a leak!

Tub boot would be my guess. Check it before it goes *pop*, cause it's really 'exciting' when that happens...

    Speaking of electricity.............

There are such things as big loads on single phase, though. All of Amtrak's NEC south of NYC is single phase 25hz, and NJT's 60hz segments are single phase. The Red Bank Substation (Coast-2) pulls in from one phase of the 230,000 volt line, and goes to two single phase 10MVA transformers. BTW...

A&P Taking Over Pathmark (business/detergents interest)

Stop ad shop tried pushing onto LI with mixed results. They never built their Roslyn megastore they promised. Was going to be right in the historical district and got huge backlash (the roads that would have fed it were way too small anyway). They bought a lot of useable locations in Glen Cove...
