Why does white plastic turn fag ash yellow?

Yet another 'feature' of plastics :/ I had a Saturn (car) for 12 years. By the time I tossed it, there were body gaps you could stick your fingers into - the plastic body panels ultimately shrink and distort like crazy. I think GM's dumping them thankfully. The other fun one is the old Kodak...

    A little teaser...

We need mechanism pics, too. :)

    GE Stratoliner Range - saved!

In Home Ec in middle school, we had 60's intage GE's with a 'supermatic' feature, as the acient teacher called it. You set the temperature then punched in the pot size and it did something wonderful. We made tacos once with it, and couldn't use the superhot sauce, instead having to get the...

    Windows Vista RC1 Evaluation download

Ahhhh I used to tick off a few people on a project I worked on by pointed out, while we were waiting for Windoesn't to reboot for the 50,000,000,000 time, that at home, I have a Mac, because it's unix and..just...works... Windows is basically a big piece of closed proprietary garbage that's...

    The Queen Exposed

Fluid drive is just what the name says it is. The inside of the fluid unit is filled with an oil, and there's an impeller, spun by the motor. The walls of the unit have ribs inside, and as the impeller spins, it flings the oil around, spinning the outside shell, which has the drive pulley...

    Sears & Roebuck HOMART DISHWASHER

Homart was likely Sear's line of 'home' products, and the appliances were rolled in there prior to Kenmore (?). Most memorable Homart product has to be those belt driven fans from hell that you STILL see peeking out of attic windows. They must have sold a zillion of them. (The reverse with...

    Sylvania Halolight television

Yep, got an old ceramic TV light at home. Was on the grandma's set for decades. Those superthing halolights are nice looking sets are cool, too. I think Sylvania dropped the Halolight thing in the 60's - Not everyone liked the effect (most didn't), and it was costly anyway.

Is the Dyson DC18 out in the UK yet?

Ok, what IS IT about Dysons? We have one at work (DC07?) and frankly, it sucks. And I don't mean that in a good way. It's quite awkward, it's full of leaky joints, and the root cyclone thing is blah - a cyclonic vacuum, big deal. The beater bar cant' be pulled easy, I don't want to know WHAT you...

    Sears & Roebuck HOMART DISHWASHER

Wow, nice condition! But... That automagic pop up drain simply is the COOLEST thing out there. Pretty simple, too - looks like they modified a conventional sink drain and pop-up. 1700 rpm motor :) And it spins that impeller around. How well did these old impeller machines clean?

I Fear NO Unadjustable Pressure Switch!! (Frigilux's Finest Hour)

The thing is, the EPA sets water use limits and electric use limits Less fill, lower spin. And lower spin means a cheaper washer anyway. The stupid thing is it's just lost in the end because you dry longer and can't wash as much. But hey, that's the EPA for you. Same guys who brought you the...

    Gasoline Prices

Also: it's past labor day and gas prices traditionally drop with the demand. Oil's headed towards $60/barrel as the mideast and africa cool off, not to mention the hurricane season didn't happen. Realize we're trading *futures* here, so a lot of it is speculation driven. With a quiet mid east...

    The Thor finally arrives

I believe when RCA released the '45', they origionally were going to put records on colored vinyl so you could ID what catagory they were, much like the color coded record labels of the day. TYhat died off fast. (always liked the red ones for whatever reason) Actually, I think the first year...

    Too many wires!

I've done a few industrial control systems where the cabling was as thick as your arm going into the terminal blocks.... NJ transit's electrical substations are all cable tray overhead, and typically you've got 20 or more multicounductor cables comming from the low side of the death house, plus...

Pics Of New Frigidaire TL'er At Work: The First Load

They still use the pneumatice/mechanical water level controls with the adjusting screw on the backside? Or did the EPA outlaw that too? :(

    its alive

Woah..rapidry? You mean it starts out a bit slow then cliks into unimatic like warp speed?

    its alive

Wha'ts the solinoid + extra roller on there for? (I'm guessing the two lower rollers do the spin/pulsate thing, via motor reversal?)

Other equipment that uses vacuum motors

In industry, the VFD basically has killed the market for DC motors beyond small applicance size. A good # of elevators are AC VFD, and they're universal in pumping and sewage. They've displaced even wound rotor motors. The last real hold out, beyond some obscure machine tool and light duty...

    Todays POD----

    A 9 and a 7? You need a 5 and 4 to complete the set ;) (actually, I've heard little good about the 5's). I've got a '7 with remote. It's a nice set :)

    Rob - what's that RCA to the right? CTC-5? 7? 9?

    POD..Youngstown DW

Was that why kitchen Aid put the timer all the way down there? It'd seem that they intended the washer to be put up a bit high, otherwise, the lady of the house would have to bend over. Though I'm sure that feature was popular with the man of the house ;)
