I have literally shot old appliances before! 😂

Whirlpool and Samsung are reducing the maximum spin speed on their washers

Hey Matt, thanks for the kind comments. It's interesting to hear you're an experienced TV repairman. I grew up with a kid who's dad was a TV repairman and we used to hang out in his basement shop checking out the tools and methods he used for repair. I remember being strongly warned not to touch...

Whirlpool and Samsung are reducing the maximum spin speed on their washers

It probably is more efficient. And after seeing videos of the guts visible from the backside of these modern washers I was amazed to see a simple motor and belt setup. I mean that is amazing it can operate within the full range of speeds needed with that setup due to the modern electronic...

Whirlpool and Samsung are reducing the maximum spin speed on their washers

Ok, I went back and read the older posts in this thread (just joining this discussion yesterday). Which I should have done prior to posting earlier. I see you and the other guy did post pics of washer motors with high rpms up to 17.5K. Not 20K, but certainly very fast nonetheless. Very...

Whirlpool and Samsung are reducing the maximum spin speed on their washers

What are the makes and models of the two examples you show in the pics of machines with 20K rpm motors? We can simply look up their manuals and specs and settle the debate easily with that.

Whirlpool and Samsung are reducing the maximum spin speed on their washers

I don't think anyone's claiming that electric motors can't reach 20K rpm or well beyond that. Or that it's not possible to reduce their speed down to something usable for washing machine purposes. Only that electric motors are available that operate within a very wide range of speeds depending...

    Silencing an Amana/Speed Queen washer

Thanks Chet, I really do appreciate this old machine. I grew up with machines like this in our home. It was the first machine other than our record player that I recall encountering and being fascinated with as a toddler. A fascination that has stuck with me into adulthood and now older age...

Whirlpool and Samsung are reducing the maximum spin speed on their washers

I'm no expert on washer motors, but I also was surprised to read they may achieve those speeds. It would require a pretty elaborate (and hence expensive) transmission to slow it down enough to a working speed needed for washing clothes. But on the other hand, I know brushless motors used in RC...

Whirlpool and Samsung are reducing the maximum spin speed on their washers

That's amazing. As only one example, the H-60 Blackhawk/Seahawk helicopter is powered by T700 turboshaft (jet) engines. Its output shaft spins at about 21,000 rpms, comparable to this electric motor(?)

Whirlpool and Samsung are reducing the maximum spin speed on their washers

1600 rpm? WOW. That's like the Spitfire of spin cycles. 🤣 I assume the clothes emerge tightly bunched, but essentially damp dry?

    Silencing an Amana/Speed Queen washer

I have an older 1990 era Amana/Speed Queen heavy duty washer. Very robustly built and durable machine, a bit of a tank and sounds like it as it goes through its various cycles. This machine is located inside a very compact efficiency apartment close to an adjacent bedroom. If the washer was...

    Whirlpool: Proper grease?

I have no idea if automotive type greases are ok (I'm not a washer repairman). But boat trailers use waterproof marine grease for their axle bearings which get submerged when the boat is launched and retrieved at the ramp.

    Vintage Amana water valve replacement?

Yes, I just looked it up. It's a "backflow preventer" antisiphon device. I mean considering it just dumps the water into the top of the tub, I don't see how under any possible circumstances it could siphon or backflow anything out of the tub. And yes, I suspect it is calcified with mineral...

    Vintage Amana water valve replacement?

Today I dug deeper into the buzzing water valve/low flow/slow tub fill problem as I wait for my new valve to show up. Here's what I did and a few questions at the end: 1. Checked hot and cold water flow from the disconnected hoses - all good. 2. Connected H/C hoses to solenoid controlled water...

    Hoover 720 (Blackstone) tub removal

I love the styling of that old machine. Never seen one like that. Try to save her if you can. (y)

    Vintage Amana water valve replacement?

Thanks to all for the helpful advice. I ordered a new valve just like the R0606006/33930P. Slightly different connector orientation, but I can make it work. If that doesn't manage to fix the slow flow and buzzing sound during filling, any other ideas where to look? The buzzing sound wouldn't...

    Vintage Amana water valve replacement?

Yes, that is very similar and I could probably make it work. I went ahead and ordered one with the same chassis design except the connector prongs point in a different direction. Valve link I'm pretty sure it'll still clear the tub when installed. I may have to replace the wires with 90 deg...

    Vintage Amana water valve replacement?

Thank you. I took the valve apart and the valves themselves seem fine. And it doesn't leak water, so I'm guessing the solenoids are weak or something, not sure. I notice there is some kind of plastic coupler that goes between the valve output hose and where the hose enters the basket top. Is...
