The problem with watching all these videos is that now I’m wanting a Monitor Top.

    ~1940 * Leonard fridge

Kelvinator called its compressor the Polarsphere. I’m sure I’ve seen it pictures in some vintage ads from around 1940, and it was spherical, but I can’t find an example right now. Later ads picture a “Polarsphere” compressor that looks fairly conventional, more like a Tecumseh, which maybe it was.

1937 Frigidaire Deluxe - Compressor Problem....

I’ve watched all the videos and (spoiler alert) what a happy outcome! You do such a meticulous job. So interesting to see an original Meter Miser not only taken apart but put back together again. It proves it can be done. I guess the design is the Norge Rollator in a more compact, lightweight...

    The “Woolite” of Dishwasher detergents

I would suspect even a small amount of regular Dawn in a dishwasher would cause major oversudsing. Years ago (1987 or so) I tried to use Fulsol, a degreaser put out by the Fuller Brush Company, in a Hotpoint dishwasher and it was a near disaster.

    Whirlpool 240 volt Combo announced

This article suggests there can be a problem with the longevity of electric motors even when they’re marked 208/230 volts, if the voltage dips much below 208. http://www.brithinee.com/technical-articles/240-vs-208-volts-do-motors-care/

Waking up a few Antique Fridges...

Fun stuff! It’s almost like being there (although you can never be sure if it comes across the same in a recording.) Impressions: The GE seems to be a mighty smooth, quiet machine. After thinking it over, the chugging Norge reminds me of something Wile E. Coyote ordered from Acme. I seem to...

    Streets named after appliances/manufacturing

Excessive background about Alcoa... The Alcoa Aluminum (not steel) plant in Alcoa, Tennessee was built in 1913, after the Aluminum Company of America obtained the rights to build hydroelectric dams on the Little Tennessee River. It's been said that aluminum is congealed electricity, since...

Party Line Telephone Service - Tell Me Why

Ralph, what did you do to “activate” your rotary phone with U-verse? Mine doesn’t work and I assumed it was hopeless. Like jeb’s, our family’s party line didn’t have a special ring and we didn’t know when the other party was getting a call. The other family, an older couple, were not heavy...

    Dixie electric ranges

According to this article, Dixie bought Magic Chef, continuing to use the Magic Chef name, and was bought out by Maytag in 1986. Maytag had bought Hardwick, also located in Cleveland, Tennessee, in 1982. So Dixie didn’t go out of business, and the factory was in use until Whirlpool built a new...

[Heading North On] The City of New Orleans

That Philco is very similar to the model my folks bought in 1969. Ours may have been MOL because it had another knob to the left of the timer knob (maybe normal/gentle?) But the very attractive styling and color scheme was the same. Our machine lasted all the way to 1986. I’m stoked to see this...

1959 RCA Whirlpool Refrigerator with Auto-Defrost! $250 (Orlando, FL )

David might find that it doesn’t need a new compressor at all, considering that this should have the Seeger rotary compressor that John L thinks so highly of. As the seller says, it certainly has the looks to be worth saving.

    GE TVs,1950-85...

Back in the mid eighties, there was a little neighborhood drugstore in Nashville that still had a working GE console from what must have been the early Fifties. It seemed like it was deeper than it was wide. Maybe a 12 inch screen. The only reason I remember it was that that I happened to be in...

How The Ballpoint Pen Killed Cursive

It can take a little time to adapt to different nibs, but it looks like you’ve already made good progress. Broader nibs usually mean you have to write a little larger. In my case, the loop on an “e” will close up, but it’s not as much of an issue with a fine nib. Congrats on finding your old...

Best Soap for vintage Kitchen Aid Dishwasher

Just to clarify one thing; there is no nationwide ban on phosphates in dishwasher or laundry detergents, just an agreement by the big manufacturers not to use them. This is why Bubble Bandit can legally sell phosphated detergents. Some states do have bans, and they don’t ship to those places...
