Broken wire will be obvious, as mentioned. A basic multi meter , set to ohms, can tell you if the element is broken inside, or shorted..

Just an FYI, many machines of that era, with metal outer tubs, are now experiencing leaks because the tubs rust out. That is all.....

The "burner" is the surface unit, which heats up.
