    Beautiful Retro Australian Home

Very nice Some bits of the decoration are a tad formal for my taste. But I really like the kitchen, the terrazo deck, and the front exposure.

    Memories on coin-op dry-cleaning

I have distinct memories of the self-service machines at the Norge Village here. Unlike what some others have said above, you did not need to work with the attendant at this Village to use the machines, although there was an attendant on duty if you needed help. (They offered drop-off and full...

    A Convoluted Tale of 210 ° arc-cuate washing

If I understand the first-sale doctrine, it applies only to actual physical articles that incorporate patented technology, not the patents themselves. So I don't think that related.

In case anyone thinks I am not green

My experience living in Florida was that nothing ever got dry by itself. It either went in the dryer or stayed wet.

    Typewriters

I recall a Xerox daisy wheel typewriter that had an RS232 port and could be used as a typewriter, a terminal, or a printer. I think it was the model 1650.

Saw something I hadn't seen for years when starting a car

Those seat belt interlock systems were notorious for randomly shutting down the ignition whilst one drove down the highway. I bypassed the one in my mom's Monte Carlo.

Coming soon to Ogden - a new storage and display for the vintage laundry equipment!

So... when does the plumbing and electricity go in?

Internet Browsers in the Corporate World

I never touch IE if I don't have to. Unfortunately, at work, I have to. IE10 is the only approved browser. Our computers are extremely restricted -- we can hardly do anything other than run MS Office apps. We can't even get to a DOS prompt. We're being told that next year we'll be...

The All Important Summer BBQ Poll

Gas. I will admit that charcoal does taste better with some things, but I don't have the time or the patience to mess with it. I've got a small Weber. Propane, but it doesn't need its own tank -- it's connected to the house supply.

    Food Corporations Note: America Needs....

The real answer to this would be microwaves with a scanner built in, and barcodes on the actual food tray. You put the tray in, the oven scans the bar code, and retrieves the cooking instructions from a database. The user just presses START and off it goes.

Vintage 1960s/70s Zenith TV stereo wooden console cabinet - $300 (Woodmere)

Will, my dad has that exact same Zenith model. What's up with your turntable?

    Matchbox cars

Very cool! My brother and I had a moderately large collection (for 10-year-olds) of Matchbox, Hot Wheels, and Johnny Lightning cars. The more fanciful Hot Wheels and JL cars were fun, but my favorites were the cars that were models of real race cars; it was from them that I first learned about...

Car Accessories That Used to be Options But Are Now Standard

Sorry for the long-winded title... but the first-air-conditioned car thread got me to thinking about other accessories and things in cars that used to be extra-cost options (or aftermarket add-ons), but are now standard. Here's a few things I came up with, in roughly the decades when they first...

    New finds!

Dryer drum Was Whirlpool still using the drums with the perforated backs at this point? I thought Whirlpool/Kenmore had switched to the stationary-back design in the early '60s. Did Inglis keep using the older design for a while?

    Family's first airconditioned car

PhilR, thanks for that photo of the Riveria dash... haven't seen one of those since 1969! (When dad got rid of ours... in two years, it spent more time in the shop than in our driveway.) One other thing I recall our Riveria had was a "rear window defroster" that consisted of a little blower...

Mad skills, Stephanie! Major props to you!

    Off topic but bad idea

That maintenance guy is lucky to be alive. Lots of guys who were less stupid but also less fortunate have been killed by arc flash.

    Family's first airconditioned car

Oh, and we did own a '67 Riveria with the Comfortron system, and I remember that little hemispherical cage on top of the dash where the temperature probe hid. Like most of the automatic things on that option-loaded car, it seldom worked properly. One trick it was notorious for was, on a hot...

    Family's first airconditioned car

Ours was a '63 Buick LeSabre very similar to this one. The main thing I remember about it was the very unusual arrangement of the controls. They projected downwards from the underside of the dash headliner. The fan speed and temperature controls, as well as some vent controls, were sliders...

House full of original avocado appliances

Little fifth burner I rememeber seeing cooktops with that when I was a child. I believe it was intended for your coffee pot.
