    Power Outages-

Petrol going off I've heard of that too, but thought is was as follows: I have heard that during winter, you should keep the car's petrol tank reasonably full (i.e. not empty dregs), because of moisture condensate, which causes water to collect in the tank. I suppose it's like a box of...

Persil Pro Clean powder or liquid?

"modern liquids are far more polluting" One of the German consumer magazines also said that. A decent powder still outperforms liquids, and as for enzyme content, a few of the powders have five or six enzymes. Persil powder and Dixan powder (Henkel) have about five, and Lidl's Formil has...

UK market front & top loaders 195? to 1990 - theories, queries & rarities

Good stuff, cheers! Yes, that Zoppas is clearly a Zanussi by another name. Something always bugged me about Zanussi machines of the 1970s... the powder dispenser always looked to me, to be far too near the middle of the control panel. I'd have had the drawer offset to the left, like the...

UK market front & top loaders 195? to 1990 - theories, queries & rarities

Why is it the old adverts always make things look so glamorous? I want the New Imperial Superautomatic at 79Gns (or £82-19s-0d).

UK market front & top loaders 195? to 1990 - theories, queries & rarities

Matchboxpaul: "Perhaps it wasn't around for long enough and fell between the cracks, or too few sold to warrant a mention. Thats just my supposition though." I came to the same conclusion, that is appeared and disappeared in pretty quick succession. The Acme contract might have been nobbled...

    Twin Star

The style of it reminds me of those self-service refrigerated cabinets, seen in shops and convenience stores. I don't think it's a practical implementation either. It looks to be too clunky, cumbersome and time-consuming in loading and unloading dishware. Perhaps it was dreamt up by a...

Did the Which? magazine ever get around to doing a test report on the ACME automatic?

    British Twintub Washing Machines 1959 - 1990

Gayday twin tub They couldn't have sold many of those, not with that advertising blurb: "Twin tub, 3kW heater. Complete with heat resisting table top. No twin tub, 3kW heater. Tangle washing action." Hmm.

    British Twintub Washing Machines 1959 - 1990

'Rolls 66' I'm afraid I have no technical knowledge of these machines, other than it being one of the first successful Rolls machines. Surely the likes of Chestermike and company would know? I think they've collectively managed to disassemble Rolls and Duomatic machines in the past.

    British Twintub Washing Machines 1959 - 1990

Rolls 'Electromatic MkII' That must have been one of the ones affected by either wobbling all over the place in a very dangerous-looking way - due to the introduction of the spinner brake, or flooding the kitchen due to the emptying pump.

Instamatic Twin Tub Owen Owen was another department store, which later absorbed the department store 'Lewis's' (not to be confused with John Lewis Partnership). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Owen_Owen

    British Twintub Washing Machines 1959 - 1990

Cotto Twin Tub It appears that the Cotto machine was an independent exclusive, exclusive to Broadmead Group of Bristol, which was owned by John James, but traded as 'Broadmead' or possibly 'Broadmead Wireless' or 'Broadmead Radio'. Broadmead Group was later taken over by Firth Cleveland Group...

Well done with the information treasure trove. Here's a a couple of links to Wikipaedia and House of Fraser, regarding Isaac Benzies: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isaac_Benzie https://www.housefraserarchive.ac.uk/company/?id=c0718 It looks as though Benzies/Falconer/House of Fraser Group...

speed queen new front loader shake

Isn't it called 'resonant frequency'? I noticed that my machine gets very noisy around the 800rpm - 1000rpm, but is substantially quieter, with much less vibration when it increases the speed to 1200rpm or above. That's assuming that the vibration sensor allows the faster speeds to go ahead...

Blue jeans (or denim in general) and washing

The longest lasting jeans I've had, were the bog-standard 'Wrangler' blue jeans, standard cut. They seemed to be virtually indestructible, made with tough cotton. They were initially quite a dark blue, faded a little over time, but not too much. I found that the boot-cut from another...

    IFA 2020

Tilted drum I've had two machines with a tilted drum, the Zanussi IZ, and a Panasonic made in China. I have to say that they performed very well, particularly on the spinning, as the laundry had a tendency to migrate to the rear wall of the drum during distribution, quickly getting itself in...

Mea Culpa: I feel like a fool. New LG washer saga (cont.)

Easily done, I'm sure I've done that in the past, even more so if the hose has a plastic cuff mating with the cast metal thread of the tap/stopcock. Some of the tap/stopcock threads are badly finished these days, they can be quite sharp. I usually present the plastic cuff as straight-on as I...

Bless This House Series 2, Episode 2: 'Love Me, Love My Tree' As previously mentioned, Sid and Jean gained an Indesit automatic (for one episode only), but more to the point, Trevor and Betty lost the Hoover Keymatic, and gained an early Hoovermatic twintub. Visible at the back of Trevor. One...

    Mattresses

The late British comedienne, Victoria Wood, once made a joke about winceyette nighties and flannelette sheets, with the result being that you'd effectively be velcroed into the bed, unable to move.

    Mattresses

Of the beds I've slept in, over the decades, Sealy, Slumberland, and Myers, I'd say that Sealy is probably the best for me, for firmness and support. The Slumberland was too soft, gave me a sore back. The Myers was better but still a bit soft. I'm not convinced by those topper things, I find...
