    What? No more warm water?

If I wash a large 40 gallon load in my Maytag with it set to warm, it uses about 9 gallons of hot water.  Figuring that it costs about 2¢ a gallon to heat hot water, my cost is 18¢

    Maytag A510 replacement agitator

Those appear to be Dickies work pants.  I know for a fact that my Maytag long-stroke A606 will wash 7 of them without breaking a sweat.   That agitator was designed the that machine.  You will not improve the machine's all-around performance by replacing it with anything else.   I'm very...

We had a Vornado that looked very similar to the Handy Hannah.

Interesting article about the future of gas stoves

Here in New Jersey, leaf blowers are banned in some areas due to noise, and the fact that the dirt and refuse often gets blown to the middle of the road, only to end up in someone else's yard.

Interesting article about the future of gas stoves

I thought the reason California was doing away with gas appliances was due to the danger of earthquakes breaking the pipes.

    Gas dryers - visible flame?

There was a block of Gold Medallion all electric houses in the town I grew up in.  By the 1970s, they all had gas lines run to them due to the high cost electric heat.

    First Pie of 2021

My partner uses half Crisco and half butter.  He cuts the cold butter in with a pastry cutter, leaving small chunks of butter in the dough.  The dough must stay cold, and it's a good idea to pre-chill the mixing bowl.  The Crisco makes it flakey, and the butter adds flavor.   Pie crust is...

Slow, long stroke agitation versus short, fast stroke

I've been running a 1972 Maytag A606 long-stroke high capacity machine, with the stock pulley, for 16 years.  I have the lid switch by-passed for two reasons, I want to see what's going on, and I like to add bleach while it's agitating.   I find that the clothes get cleaner when the machine...

What Temperature Is Your Tap Hot Water?

It was a long time ago, but I don't remember a large hot load in the GE Filter Flo being a problem, just when someone took a super long shower.   When hot water was called for, the oil burner would cycle on and off to maintain hot water.  If this happened long enough to make steam in the large...

What Temperature Is Your Tap Hot Water?

The house I grew up in had it's original 1927 Thatcher coal fired steam boiler that was converted to oil circa 1939 with a Timken rotary oil burner.  It had a coil to heat the hot tap water built in, and that water sure was hot!  One downside was that if someone took a very long hot shower in...

Do top-loaders truly wash clothes better than front-loaders?

That's exactly right.  Pushing the water and detergent 'through' the fabric is what gets it clean.  You could use an agitator for 8 minutes, or you could drop the fabric into a puddle of water, continually, for an hour +.  Each of those methods can give good results, that is, if the person in...

Do top-loaders truly wash clothes better than front-loaders?

"Lazy Agitation" I have a 1972 Maytag A606.  I find that if I load the machine up so that the clothes turn over slow and steady, they get a lot cleaner than they do if I underload it so that they turn over quickly.

What Temperature Is Your Tap Hot Water?

145F at the kitchen faucet.    This works out well since I always run the Maytag Jetclean portable dishwasher on 'light wash' without using the 'accu temp' or 'heated dry' options.  Having the machine parked in front of the sink for 53 minutes is long enough.

    What time is it?

If your atomic clocks are getting a signal, they should be correct.    Does the time shown at the link below match the time on any of your clocks? https://www.time.gov/
