    Garage heater / Installation opinions

We have a three-car garage that is attached to the house but unheated. This year I am seriously considering having a electric garage heater installed. I called my HVAC company and based upon the need, they recommended a 10KW heater that runs at approx 220V / 40A. (Ratings were shown like...

    Eliminating the self-defrost

Confusion Perhaps this question has been addressed in the info above. But I will ask this question: Why would Admiral (or any other mfr) market virtually identical refrigerators at the same time, one with no-defrost in the refrigerator only and one that defrosts in the refrigerator and freezer?

    Eliminating the self-defrost

Forensics.. Sudsmaster brings up an interesting point. It would be an interesting endeavor to see if the work of manually defrosting a refrigerator actually pays off. Wasted water, lost cooling, the cost of the annoyance are interesting arguments against it. I had heard that Sears also...

Declining quality of consumer-grade products - 2009 fridge compressor autopsy...

South Korean compressors Is it LG that has the high-failure linear-compressors? If so it would be interesting to see a forensic dissection of these compressors to determine the fault.

    Eliminating the self-defrost

Dear Bradford! Your “Fountain Defrost” idea has much merit. You should consider patenting the idea. Much obliged for the education from all who commented. If I ever decide to modify/ bastardize a refrigerator, I will let y’all know.

    Eliminating the self-defrost

I noticed a comment from John L. Regarding (my words) “deterioration” of a self-defrosting refrigerator where the self-defrosting feature does not work. I always wondered about this and have a few questions for the group, and John L as well. Here goes: In the past I’ve seen 1960s era...

    Opinions: most irritating-sounding washer ever?

Appliance execution True story: I once worked for a very-well-known stereo manufacturer. We had marketed an in-dash CD player for the car, the first of its kind. In my opinion, and the opinion of many other - it was not a good unit. Skipped an awful lot. One dissatisfied customer, having been...

    Opinions: most irritating-sounding washer ever?

Newer GE “skinny mini” type We spent a week at a resort recently. The suite was outfitted with a newer General Electric compact washer with attached upper dryer. Sort of a skinny-mini type unit. I thank the dear Lord we don’t own that thing. It was very useful when we got back from the beach...

    A very small electric iron

Fun travel and toy irons. You’ve got some cool irons there! I’ve got a few more goofy irons on display in the laundry room. However this one is so small it’ll disappear on the shelf. Horrors! The things I have to worry about…

    A very small electric iron

For the sake of scale, another picture. Had dinner tonight with family. I brought up this topic. One person suggested it was a quilting iron. I agree this appears to be a European plug. No other markings on the unit other than the brand and other (presumed) markings as described earlier...

Sub Zero on CBS Sunday Morning

The knives Don’t pay attention to the WAY TOO MANY collection of knives. We keep on finding great knives at estate sales and we sharpen them up with great result. But what the heck do you do with the old knives? It’s a going joke at home. Too many vacuum cleaners, too many knives, too many...

Sub Zero on CBS Sunday Morning

Thank you It continues to be a great kitchen.. I must clarify. It is true I cannot “cook”. However, if I am given an appliance that I can operate AND given a recipe I understand, I can put out an edible product. When asked to “just whip up something” or “just put together some chili”, I will...

Sub Zero on CBS Sunday Morning

Miele fridge big bucks. Thanks for the heads-up on the Miele refrigerators. I didn’t know they were so costly. Jeepers. We bought the Miele DW as it was the best match for the gloss black. Our friends gave good reviews so we bought it. Not disappointed. I really do not look forward to the...

Sub Zero on CBS Sunday Morning

Our kitchen / No Sub-Zero yet. Here’s our kitchen. Seventeen years old now. We built the house new. We planned on entertaining and I cannot cook, so I advised hubby to design the kitchen and I’ll pick the brand of appliances. And so we HAD a Kitchenaid dishwasher and refrigerator. Wolf...

GASP ! An LED light bulb that lasted five years!

Went to buy Greenwatt and couldn’t find them I knew I bought them locally, not on-line. Couldn’t find them. Went with FEIT which has fared well in this house too. My minor detective work reveals not-so-sunny reviews for Greenwatt. Go figure. I have no good data anymore as to who is making...

GASP ! An LED light bulb that lasted five years!

We’ve got a lot of lighting in this house and some years ago I decided to change to LED light bulbs. Concurrent to that I was working for a large Japanese company that entered the LED lighting arena. Our group was setting up some testing and QC by coincidence. And so I purchased various brands...
