Hot water heaters / Gas or Electric preferred?

Hi ! Our house is 16 years old and our (very reliable) Bradford-White 70 gallon gas water heater is just beginning to announce the end of its life. It’s working but getting noisy sounding like a percolator. I may clean it out to get some more life but my understanding is that 15 years is about...

    Patent of the Day

Not me. Maybe another Paul. I don’t have any Norge stuff, sadly.

    Patent of the Day

I think my Dad’s patent is posted there somewhere. Here it is. A copy is framed in my laundry room along with a picture of Joy who I used to work with. Dan Stelli, who with my Dad made the patent possible, passed away in 1970 at age 51.

    Vintage Admiral range rescued

Uh-oh. You have a WINDOW in your door. Well, I think my data is pretty close even if the oven door window is missing on the 3EH14.

    Vintage Admiral range rescued

I don’t understand Admiral model numbers My (late) Mother-in-Law has a 1960 Admiral range in the basement. This thing is just BEAT! It’s on a farm and was used to death, however it is still there and was last used for canning. I wanted to look up the model and found the model tag. I have...

    Vintage Admiral range rescued

The “Rotary Roaster” I am a big fan of Admiral only because I live in Chicago and everyone had something made by them. If I remember correctly, Admiral bought the Chicago Heights “Prestline” range company and made some ranges there. Then again, there may be a Stewart Warner connection as...

Westinghouse Laundromat at Oak Lawn, Illinois estate sale

Viscount The radio with the Whirlpool emblem on the tuning dial was a Viscount brand. NIB, and there were two of them. I did not buy, though I did notice the emblem resemblance.

Westinghouse Laundromat at Oak Lawn, Illinois estate sale

Big Boy rotisserie I may have to start another thread. What do y’all know about Big-Boy charcoal / electric rotisseries?

Westinghouse Laundromat at Oak Lawn, Illinois estate sale

I went four times I didn’t know about this reference to the Oak Lawn sale until this morning. I went to that sale four times. Indeed, there was a lot of fun stuff but oddly not too crowded. I went early morning. I bought the Big Boy stainless BBQ grill with rotisserie. $52. I don’t think it...

    Laundering the American Flag

Opinions requested: Through life I have accrued three American flags. These are the Veteran’s style that are draped over the casket. My Dad’s remains folded and sits in a triangular wooden box. All good. My Father-in-Law’s remains folded and sits in a triangular wooden box. All good. My...

Interesting view of P&G brands in 1961

An OLD joke My MOTHER, who would be 91 if she were alive today, told me this joke years ago... Q: Why did the woman take a box of DUZ to bed with her? A: Because DUZ.... DOES EVERYTHING !!

Another refrigerator exploded in a house

Fiberboard not mentioned Fiberboard was not mentioned at the seminar but rather the constant exposure of egg-crate like plastic framing to overheated components as the cause.

Another refrigerator exploded in a house

Growing awareness I am a CFEI (Certified Fire and Explosion Investigator). At the last big pow-wow I went to I mentioned to my table that I hoped to hear (again) the continuing investigations into exploding refrigerators. The non-appliance manufacturers at the table looked at me like I had...

Vintage Kitchen-Aid Coffee Grinders - are they good?

Have both, my opinion. I’ve used the original (old version) grinder with great results. Someone gifted me with the reproduction grinder and indeed it intermittently sprays you with coffee grounds. It’s as if the motor goes into hyper-drive and then sandblasts you with coffee. I kept my...

LG WT7305 TL w/ “Easy” Agitator Tops Ratings

Easy agitator We had a Hotpoint Silhouette with an “Easy” agitator that I thought moved the clothes around quite well. However I will not buy Korean or Chinese major appliances or cars. People say “Look what you get for the money!” And I say “Look at what you DON’T get for the money! “

How long do cordless phone sets last?

Panasonic Panasonic machines have been quite reliable for us although the AT&T unit and Sony unit we had years ago were fine too. We still have an AT&T land line as well with touch-tone phones as we maintain an office at home.

    1950's Westinghouse roasters

Here’s ours... We did some canning last weekend so our Westinghouse roaster was back in use as a hot bath for all the jars. As you can see, we got a lot of snow last night.

Speed Queen service story part 2

.... Part 1 was seven years ago. Anyway, I bought a new Speed Queen pair when I built the house in 2005. The washer and dryer are used a lot. I suspect I do a load or two per day, almost every day of the week. The washer ran perfectly until 2013. Eight years of good use at which point the...
