    Ungrounded Outlets

That 5-20R with 1 horizontal, one vertical slot is interesting. Do they always have a ground pin? Without the ground pin it looks the same as our ELV (Extra Low Voltage) plug and socket in Australia, used for low voltage DC wiring - they are 2-pin only, one horizontal and one vertical pin.  ...

ooops?? I thought this was going to the ATTT (Green) section - I'm happy  for the thread to be moved if Robert believes it more appropriate.   Gizmo.

Great new TV mini-series - "In Our Blood."

My hubby and I just finished watching a great new TV 4 part mini-series - called "In Our Blood."   It is the story of the Australian response to the AIDS epidemic - from first reports from the US, to its arrival here, to government, medical and policy responses. It's not really a documentary...

Appliances: The Future is Battery Powered

You don’t realize what it takes to make solar panels, "You don’t realize what it takes to make solar panels, most of the raw materials that are required to make come from places like China which don’t have much in the way of human rights and usually slave labor is used like Dan mentioned."  ...

Appliances: The Future is Battery Powered

my oldest Ego battery is over 6 years old and still good as new. Often the cheap machines have crap chargers and crap Battery Management System (BMS) which leads to short battery life.   It wasn't very green of robbinsandmyers' friend to toss a whole machine, when a new battery would have...

    main wash pump on dishwashers

Efficiency is the answer An inefficient motor produces a lot of waste heat, the motor needs a fan to remove the accumulating heat. More recent motor technologies use less power for the same output, this means less waste heat is generated. Thus a simple aluminium heat sink may be enough to...

Appliances: The Future is Battery Powered

Guilty as charged. I still haven't read those links in the first post (too many of them to bother with...) but I get the idea now - fit a stove top with built in battery, which can recharge slowly, at a rate that is supported by a single, standard power outlet, to run the short term high...

Appliances: The Future is Battery Powered

battery garden tools, etc. Whole house battery - I've been living off one for almost 20 years. Actually longer - the one I have now is nearing 20 years old. It has been looked after and not over-discharged, and is pretty much as good as new. I hope to get it to 25 or 30 years old before...

Found! I found this vintage GMH Frigidaire washer!!

I have a much older Australian Frigidaire, there is a link below to a photo of it on this website. It has a round body and is manually operated, you fill it from a hose then turn it to "wash" or "spin."   I have owned it for quite a few years, unfortunately I stored it a shed away from where...

Found! I found this vintage GMH Frigidaire washer!!

Memories My memories aren't good, I'm afraid. We had no end of trouble with ours. It shook the whole house when it was spinning (not washing) to the point it rattled my bedroom windows four rooms away. It was a solid house, my Dad was a carpenter and he built it himself.  Most of the time when...

Found! I found this vintage GMH Frigidaire washer!!

Photo please!   My family had one of those when I was a kid - a Deluxe Multimatic with the beige painted dashboard.   I'm excited for you.   You know these were made at the Holden factory in Dandenong, don't you?

Speed Queen TR7 with a transmission!

Louis is right. The term is offensive.   It is also offensive to people who actually give a damn if the planet is still inhabitable in 100 years - comparing us to Nazis is childish and ignorant.   Plastic isn't the enemy and light weight isn't the enemy. Here is what I think is going on...

1E error samsung wf600 front load

I missed where you said it does the error as soon as you power on - before starting a cycle.   I would guess a main board fault then? Or maybe a faulty inlet valve? Many late model machines do a quick "self test" when powered on - check valves, pump, motor, heater before even starting a...

1E error samsung wf600 front load

BTW when searching for this error online: it is IE not 1E. IE stands for Inlet Error.   A google search seems to mostly call it 1E but it is really IE, for what it's worth.   Good luck with it.

1E error samsung wf600 front load

Is it taking in any water? The 1E error means it is not detecting any water coming in.   Most common reasons for "no water fill" error are: 1. inlet valve failed 2. strainer blocked in water inlet hose - at tap end, or in valve where water hose connects.   Should be easy and low cost to fix.

I finally figured out how to remove that annoying plastic guard on my Whirlpool washer timer dial

Hi Ryne   Well done! That is a good solution.   Can I suggest you also contact Whirlpool, request that they take the needs of blind and vision impaired people into account in appliance design, explain what you had to do to your machine to make it usable for you, and that you shouldn't really...

    Speed Queen oil weight

Auto trans fluid in washing machine... Some years ago we had a very small solar power setup and every watt had to be counted. (We live off-grid.)   I modified a Whirlpool belt-drive washer to use less power - a 60V DC permanent magnet motor (from a prehistoric huge computer tape drive), 240V...

Biden admin proposes more stringent efficiency standards

What does the word Monopoly mean? Apart from the board game... A monopoly is one company being the only supplier. That is what the word means.   If there are two or more companies supplying the product or service, it is not a monopoly, no matter how similar their products of services.  ...

30 year old GE washing machine leaks

Check any strainers in the fill hoses - where the hose screws to the tap, and where it connects to the washing machine - inside the screw fitting on the fill valve. If the little strainer screens get blocked, you get a slow fill.   The inlet valve often has a fine plastic filter with a little...

    Suspension on my Miele W1926

Put on your Maxwell Smart voice...   "The old scratches on the porthole trick. That's the third time this week..."   Knock Knock Knock Knock Knock. Your washing machine is telling you in Morse Code it wants new shockers.
