Replacing porcelain tub with stainless steel

I wash brightly colored clothes in my old Bendix front loader combo. with cold water and Tide With Bleach powder. It does a great job. Bright colors are the only thing I would use cold water for. My area has very hard water. If your machine is 20 years old I wouldn't throw it out until it rolls...

Replacing porcelain tub with stainless steel

Cold Water Wash------ Is a BIG problem. It will be even worse with a front-loader. Turns the machines into cesspools. The so-called Cold Water detergent manufacturers have perpetuated a situation that makes them more money and costs the consumer. Big surprise. Won't make a bit of difference...

GM Frigidaire dryer “1940’s 1950’s retro working”

Bob---- I think it's the fuse. I've had a few of them. They were all electric and had the typical small diameter Hamilton venting. If they were near a gas stove they yellowed. If they were near a gas fired furnace in a humid basement the cabinet would quickly get covered with surface rust. Most...

vintage GE curb find, info needed

The one I found went to a friend of mine here in Roanoke. I think it is about a '53. The Activator in his has slots at the top with cool looking Moderne ridges around them. It also has a very fast spin. It takes it a while to get there though, so it snuck up on us at first. I wish you success...

    Maytag/Speed Queen Pair

Kool. Dryer is the match to the washer Greg gave me so many years ago. Still a daily driver. If the dryer is as tough as the washer has been, it should go for years. Does not look high-mileage.

    JUST BROUGHT THESE HOME......

A beautiful set. What else could one need to do laundry? If you have an 800 series you can do anything! Congratulations.

POD 6-6-2020 Maytag Ad "One Tub for the Clothes One Tub for the Dirt"

I don't think most people would purposely pour buckets full of sand into their washer anyway. What they didn't say was how long it might take to wash the sand out. Maybe after a dozen loads or so it eventually gets thrown over the side. In any event, I'm sure that any sand that remained was very...

My new toy / Miele upright vacuum

I got a yellow one about six years ago. Works very well, However, as previously mentioned, it is cumbersome to use. I don't haul it between floors to use it. Hard to get repairs in my area as Miele around here is NOT mainstream. So it really doesn't matter about the warranty.

    Can't find any bread flour?

Scarce in SW Virginia as well---- At least, in the chain stores. Hoever, I get a 25# bag at Sam's for about $20.00. Plenty of it. They also have stacks of AP. I find both the BF and AP to be very good quality. I don't know about Costo since there isn't one in my area.

Since it doesn't look like we've had a detergent thread in a while...

Dishwasher: Cascade Boil Out. Laundry: Ariel Original (Love the fragrance in the summer!), FOCA (using it up on loads I add Clorox to), and Tide w/ Bleach for the Bendix Combo and Kenmore Collapso. Still have a decent supply of phosphated VIVA for really badly soiled clothes.

Thoughts on these 2 vintage washers on Craigslist

Those Hotpoints of that era are built like tanks. Easy to open-up and clean out. Trouble-shoot and repair any rust. Wash very well.

    FREE Maytag A300 Automatic Washer

I have one just like it. Found it NIB 15 or so years ago. Has been a daily driver ever since. They are great washers.

    station wagons: 1957-90...

Jim, I agree, the Custom Cruiser was a Ninety-Eight with a tail-gate. On a long trip was a couch-on-wheels. Considering their weight, they were pretty quick, although at 6mpg on Premium fuel you knew you weren't driving a Rambler. A 1970 Vista-Cruiser with a 455 was a ROCKET for sure!

POD 5-11-2020 WH 1958 Speed Dryer

I saw one of these in use all the time, back in the day. I don't know just how "economical" it was to operate. What I do remember was looking through the glass down past the protective wire cage to see the element glowing red. The interior was white enamel that tended to yellow over the years...

Once COVID-19 season eases up, I will be the very proud father of THESE beauties!

    Congratulations! Very nice looking set!

A Few of my Favorite Things

I have a friend here in Roanoke,VA with a Frog-Eye washer very similar to yours. It still works perfectly and operates very quietly for it's age. I find the extra row of slots at the very top of the tub allows for more water to diffuse on the spray rinses and makes them more effective than later...

    Clotheslines

Just waiting for the pollen to get through doing its thing. Nothing better than summer clothes washed in Ariel and hung out to dry in the sun.

    Talking about cook books

All About Home Baking------ Yours is in great shape. Mine is a 1933 model, high mileage and completely worn out. A good book. I agree with Hans, the Betty Feezor series are good. Old reliable Joy of Cooking and Southern Cooking by Mrs. Dull. The River Road series. My Grandma's old Crisco's...

    A modern Frigidaire thumper

Water Hogs------ Do the best rinsing. I think the 1-18 used a lot of water. Cleaning wise IMO the original Unimatic/Multimatics Live-Water action was the best, especially after the deep tub was introduced. IMO the Deep-Action type was inferior at cleaning really dirty clothes. IMO the 1-18 was...

    Butter

The Challange brand is tasty, just hard to find around where I live. The KerryGold with Sea Salt is really good on fresh from the oven yeast breads. French butter with sea salt is also very good. None of the brands I grew up with taste the same to me anymore. Something serious is missing. A&P...
