    GE Top-loader in the house

I do believe what GE referers to as the "Extra Action Basket" are the models with the ribbed basket. I have seen them in both plastic and SS models. From the pictures it doesn't look like Toggles has this king of basket. The best way to describe it is that GE got the idea from an old fashioned...

    Blue Metallic

The SAV machines are the ones based on the Amana/Speed Queen design. IMHO these were problem machines to begin with. After Maytag added their own improvements it only got worse. Constant stem seal failures (leaks) that would damage spin bearings and make the machine very loud. Pump, belt, and...

New Finds, the week for Westinghouse.............

Kenny, I can relate to that ! I too once made the mistake of cutting open a sulphur dioxide system. Back before anyone cared about reclaiming freon. The junkyard that we used to take the old units to wanted all compressors removed first. So it was standard practice to just cut the lines before...

AARGH, got the thing totally fouled up!

The drain (lower) impeller is driven by the wash (upper) impeller. It is not supposed to grip the motor shaft. So when you install the upper impeller rotate it until the tabs on the underside fall into the tabs on top of the lower impeller before tighteneing the center screw. The metal spacer...

    Avocado Maytag washer

That dryer is at least 15 years old. In 1990 Maytag changed the panel to the flat black color. The 482 models were made exclusively for "The Appliance Store" chain that went out of business (I think) in 1992. Ed

What modern stove would you buy?

My subject Drift was cut off in the above post. It was in reference to Toggle's suggestion that "repairmen say the STUPIDEST things" Actually you wouldn't believe the things that are said to customers. Some just talk to much. I also prefer open oven elements on electric ranges. I just like to...

    Parts and Repairs

or . . . if anything is causing the solenoid to not be able to pull completely in when energized. A bent plunger or cam bar ? They sometimes do bend. Maybe just a bad part. I agree with Coldspot66, I like FSP parts much better than aftermarket. But even they can fail occationally. Ed

    Anybody want an Avocado Maytag?

what's an A808 like ? The A808 is not all pushbutton. It's pretty much the same as the A806. Just has the gold painted lower control panel instead of the blue/turquoise. Ed

Brooklyn, Heights, NY (New York City)

Toggle Thanks for the posting the pictures and the info. Do post more sometime. It was a nice diversion from all the bad news lately. My best friend (from high school) lives on Long Island. Moved there right out of school. He's a traffic engineer and works for the Dept of Transportation. I...

Intel Donates $1 Million To American Red Cross In Support Of Hurricane Katrina Disaster Relief Effor

blame and criticism helps nobody . . . It won't change what's happened. Put your energy and resources toward helping if you can. It's sad to see that we have people in the country that make their top priority in every situation an opportunity to make George Bush look bad. I'm sure in...

    Maytag wringer---pretty in pank!

Second That . . . Of all the wringers I have seen I have never come across one with an agitator like the automatics.

    I broke down

I have also seen (only once) this style in avacado green. Probably a first year (1980) model. As applyguy said, this control panel shape ran through 1996. From 1980 through 1984 it was exactly like Steve's in the picture. In late 1984 through 1989 the buttons and timer knob changed to brown...

    A washer story!

Not sure I understand the "heavy duty" one. It's never the rubber disk that wears out on the newer type. It almost always breaks off at the motor or transmission shaft. Now on the older ones the rubber disk would wear out until the pins from the two opposing disks would hit each other and break...

    Removal of Maytag A208 Agitator

set-screw An A208 would definately not have a set-screw. However, the set-screw was used on turquoise agitators. Starting with the "12" series (about 1984). I would have to agree with the good advice the others gave- check the belts first. While you have the machine tipped back to look at the...

    Air Conditioners

I am surprised at the difference in A/C sizes in different climates. Of course more humid/ hotter climates would need more cooling capacity but a 2 1/2 or 3 Ton in a 1200 square foot house and a 3 1/2 in a 1400 square foot amazes me. My house has a 3 ton basic 10 SEER Carrier that has no problem...

    New Speed Queens

not exactly the same . . . The Speed Queens and Huebsch still have the original transmission and porcelain outer tub. Amana changed the outer tub to plastic somewhere around 2000. After Maytag bought Amana they quickly made a few changes. They developed a version of their transmission (called...

    New Vintage Find!!

What a great find Austin. I have never seen one in person. How does the dispenser work? Why is it not really a true filter-flow? You have to admit GE (in the good old days) did come up with very unique ways of doing things. BTW, the BIG dryer that is said to be the match to this is pretty easy...
