Why did they ever stop having those double drainer sinks? I have never liked the inset sinks, which seem like a retrograde step to me. Interesting that they only put in a 2 ring cooker. I think most people got a fridge before getting a washing machine, especially in hot countries like Oz. I...

    Vegeta seasoning??? Anyone?? Eastern Europeans???

Cooking Salt I don't know what the chemical difference is between table salt and cooking salt but cooking salt is less salty so you use more of it for the same effect. I would put a desert spoonful of cooking salt in a saucepan of potatoes to boil for mashing...

    HOOVER A3786 LOGIC WASHER

Might be worth trying it on a few different wash programmes to see if it works on some but not others. It could be a burnt out solenoid coil in one of the water valves. If you have a multimeter you can check these on the ohms range (with machine unplugged from mains!). They should read about...

    Quick Mixer

That reminds me of a wind up toy helicopter my brother got as Christmas or birthday present when we were kids. It came with the rotor blades loose in the box and you were supposed to clip them on. Those blades never did get clipped on as the toy was always "A drill like daddies!".

    Vegeta seasoning??? Anyone?? Eastern Europeans???

I've seen it in the shops but never tried it as I thought it was mainly just an expensive way of buying salt. The selection of herbs and spices here is quite limited so I brought a few items back from UK when I was over a few weeks ago. One thing I did bring was cooking salt, as that does not...

    Cherry Bread Pudding

I looked up "foszlós kalács" in Google Translate and foszlós on its own translates as "sleazy" but the 2 words together translate as "spongy cakes". My Magyar/Angol dictionary gives kalács as "milk loaf" but does not have foszlós. I found a recipe on a Hungarian site and roughly translated it...

    Cherry Bread Pudding

Here in Hungary they sell a brioche type sweet loaf and sometimes they are sold off cheap on the sell-by-date. If I see them reduced like that I buy them to make bread pudding. Yesterday I visited a fruit farm and was told I could help myself to some cherries which were ready to pick. Today I...

    Bearing Kit for Miele W423

I would do it sooner rather than later as, if the bearings break up they will damage other parts of the machine. The 2 ball bearings will be available from any bearing shop so I would get them first then strip it and check if the rest can be re-used.

Hotpoint New Generation Exclusive 1535 and Creda Reversair 37404

Interesting to see in that ad. that in those days the twin tub was a bit cheaper than the basic auto, although the TT must have cost more to manufacture. Later on the twin tubs became quite expensive when less people bought them.

    Bearing Kit for Miele W423

Do you know what the seal looks like? One option would be to strip it and take the old seal to a bearing shop and see if they have the right size. The bearings themselves will almost certainly be off-the-shelf items. If it uses a carbon face seal like the old Hoover Logics etc you might get away...

    Pork chops....what's your preferred method?

I do them in the oven on a low heat with some sage & onion stuffing. At least that's what I would do of I could get chops here in Hungary lol.

English Electric Yes, I think that washer would normally be English Electric but I suppose having the word "English" in the makers name would not have been a good idea in Ireland in those days. It might be possible to paint the door surround.

Stuff Your Mother Never Made You

We never had corn on the cob or sweetcorn as my mum didn't like it, whist it is one of my favourites. We also never had sardines or pilchards but that was because my dad was given them so often as a child he vowed never to have them in his own home. I don't think I ever had rice or pasta as part...

I think I'm going for it....

That is a neat looking machine. I wish I had my mothers old 1957 Kerstar vacuum she was given when she got married.

    Cleaning Products You Miss.....

This was not so long ago, perhaps 15 years but I bought a small tub of a pink paste called "So Easy Your No. 1 Enviromentally Friendly Multi Purpose Household Cleaner" (yes, the miss-spelling of environmentally is as copied from the tub). I don't normally buy from cold callers but this chap...

Kevin, your photo link didn't work but on this site you don't need to put up photos via Photobucket anyway, you can upload them from your PC. http://s366.photobucket.com/user/kevhallett/media/2013-05-02195847_zps45766c39.jpg.html

    Hotpoint Empress Help!

ChesterMike is probably the person to advise on this but usually you take out the gearbox from underneath, complete with shaft.
