1978 GE PortaCool AC ROADSIDE FIND

Energy usage is high A 4000 BTU unit will most likely not overpower any room. But those things were energy hogs. 780 watts is around what most 8,000 BTU units use now days. With an EER over 10, not at 5.1. I think that was even really low back then for a window unit. Plus, as much as I like GE...

    One Washer, Two Dryers?

One up, one down In my last house we had a washer/dryer in the main floor laundry half bath, and another set in the downstairs utility room. 2 bedrooms were up, and 2 down. That way laundry wasn't required to be toted up the stairs and back down. That being the main advantage. But in the event...

    GE Range part compatability

Ebay.. There are six used ones posted on Ebay at the moment. No idea on cross referencing a new one for compatability

GE will still be GE for now....

Looks like the on again, off again sale of the GE appliance division, is off again http://www.usatoday.com/story/money/2015/12/07/electrolux-shares-take-dive-after-ge-says-hold-its-appliances-business/76912196/

NEW MACHINES! w,d,dw - HD and GE blowout

Does 1 1/2" = wayyyyyy ? Looks like the GE was 34 2/5" deep, the Maytag 32 15/16". Rounding by me indicates only around 1.5" difference. Just wondered if that small difference was enough to be a concern. I would almost imagine the difference is the door of the GE bulges out, where as the Maytag...

    New GE Top Loaders

Serviced from the bottom I looked at the exploded view on the GE website and also I looked at the cabinet in Lowes, which wraps around and is riveted on the back. These machines are serviced from the bottom. I stuck my camera underneath a washer at Lowes after I tipped it up enough to get a...

Who uses their GE post filter-flo as their daily driver?

Bought a TOL WPRE8100 Hydrowave in 2007, and love it. I had a 1983 dancing Maytag that had an out of balance tub, that I never could get the mom and pop store to agree to replace. Folllowed by a 2000 Amana that bit the dust at 6 years with bad bearings. These machines are super easy to fix, not...

    GE Nugget ICE

FloJet If you can't get a water line to your refrigerator ice maker, consider buying a Flojet. I installed one of these in the adjacent cabinet with a 5 gallon water bottle, although I'm sure you could use a 3 gallon one, and it pumps the water to the ice maker on demand. It works great to get...

    westinghouse terrace top stove

AC vs DC electricity Take it back a step further. I just saw a clip on the Decades channel stating it was Edison and Westinghouse who fought over what type of electrical power this country would use. Edison was pushing DC current, while Westinghouse was for AC current. Thank goodness AC won...

    westinghouse terrace top stove

I can't help but wonder about parts availability now days. I had one of these in my home back in 1977. The oven control was defective when we moved in. It was a part that had to be ordered and not cheap back then. Heaven help you finding that part 30+ years later.

Question about a heat pump condensor fan ....

I would stick with the 825 RPM, but there would be no harm in going up to a 1/4 HP replacement motor. It might make finding one a bit easier as well. It could also help the motor last longer, as 1/6 HP seems very small for a large fan blade. RPM determines air flow across the coil, and thats all...

New owner of a 2015 Speed Queen TL washer!

Energy guide Yes, we'll be interested to hear how the water level works out, as there is a BIG difference between the 400 KWHs on the AWN542 you were going to buy, and the 112 KWHs on the model you ended up buying. 112 is really, really low.

Let Your Refrigerator Make The Coffee: GE Meets Keurig

Another flash in the pan.... Anyone remember the Samsung with the TV in the door back in 2007? Wonder how many of these they sold? I can just hear dad saying "OK kids dinners over, now lets all pull up our chairs around the refrigerator so we can watch TV"

Speed Queen AWN542 Water Supply Hose Angled or Straight?

Turn off the valves ? I'd honestly like to know how many people turn the valves off after each use. In my 40 years of laundry, I never have, and I don't know anybody else whos does either. I'm not arguing that it's a safer way to go. I do look at the hose's every so often and replace at some...

    GE post filter-flo washer

cfz2882 splutch ??? I'm not sure what you are referring to when you say "splutch"? The mode shifter is all metal. But the agitator coupling is nylon plastic. Just a little bit of wear on this part would allow noticeable play in the agitator. This is less than a $10 part, and can be replaced...

    GE post filter-flo washer

Enough is enough.... Alright, enough is enough. I have owned my fair share of dud washers. In 1983, I bought a Maytag that must have barely passed vibration tests at the factory. I couldn't convince the mom and pop store that sold it to me to replace the tub under warranty, so I just lived with...

Washing your kids at the laundromat....

Follow up..... I found a follow up story to this one, but couldn't find it later on to link it. It stated that another playmate/sibling closed the door and latched it after the girl had climbed in. This would explain how it started, especially if there was time on the machine already paid for.

Washing your kids at the laundromat....

Another crazy story in the news...5 yr old locked in a commercial front loader for 5 minutes. http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2014/09/03/girl-trapped-washing-machine/15006349/

JCPenney Dryer and my Laundry Area

Penny's / GE Most of Penny's appliances were manufactured by GE. I had a 1978 Penny's microwave that was for sure GE, from the angled door front it had. GE also uses a 2 letter identifier at the front of the serial number. IF...this can translate across, that dryer was made in July of 1977...

OK Experts we have a Speed Queen problem....

Balance Ring I would think the last thing you would want to do is run the washer with the balance ring removed. It's there for a purpose. GE uses a fluid filled ring. If SQ does the same, I'd wonder if somehow it's lost its fluid, and its ability to do its job correctly.
