Thanksgiving Is About Two Weeks Away-What's Everyone Cooking

Re:#6 Regarding letting good food go to waste. Trust me, when I’m finished stripping the turkey breast carcass of ALL the breast meat there is NOTHING left but the bare bones. I use all the smaller pieces of the white meat to make either some Turkey Chili, a casserole, turkey salad sandwiches...

Thanksgiving Is About Two Weeks Away-What's Everyone Cooking

Nay, Launderess, I’ll pass on making Turkey soup with the carcass, Pressure Cooker or not.  I don’t like messing with all the bones.  But for those that like to do so more power to you.  It’s certainly a great way to stretch the grocery budget.  My Mom always did this and it was delicious.    ...

Thanksgiving Is About Two Weeks Away-What's Everyone Cooking

I’ve already got most of the ingredients purchased.  It will be just David and I this year for Thanksgiving.  It’s David’s very favorite meal of the year and we usually eat the leftovers for dinner for the next 4 to 5 days,  which is fine with me.   The Menu is as follows:  Roast Turkey...

    Early '50s +/- Philco Refrigerator

Ralph, I wonder if that purple discoloration around the edges of the inside of the door frame could be some kind of mold?  If that’s the case it could be very difficult to get rid of it.   Eddie

    Early '50s +/- Philco Refrigerator

Ralph, from looking at these vintage ads these Philco Conservador’s looked like they were pretty nice refrigerators for 1940.     Eddie

    Early '50s +/- Philco Refrigerator

Thanks Tom, I didn’t know that about the Crosley patent on refrigerator door shelves.  Makes sense though with their Shelvador model.   Eddie

    Early '50s +/- Philco Refrigerator

Ralph, Did you look at the link to the eBay listing that I posted?  It’s an early 1940’s model, not from the 50’s.  There are several more similar listings on eBay for this same Philco Coservador refrigerator.     Eddie

    Early '50s +/- Philco Refrigerator

Ralph, I’ve never seen a separate shelve door like this one that isn’t actually on the refrigerator door.  Perhaps the control on the left above the freezer section is to control the temp of the shelve door?  The 50 degree setting would be for those that wanted to keep their butter soft.  Kind...

    Number PULEAZE! Part Seven:

Re:#55 Yes Jack, and at $7.50 for 3 mins these Long Distance calls were damn expensive in 1967 too!  Minimum wage  was $1.35 an hr. in ‘67 so a 3 min call would have cost a min wage earner almost 6 hours of their earnings!    People didn’t just causally pick up the phone and ideally talk on...

    Vintage Food Advertisements: Part Twenty-three

#36 I remember Foremost Big Dip Ice Milk.  My grandma used to buy it.  She used to say it was “dietetic” because it was lower in calories than ice cream.     Eddie

    naphtha fels and the washer

You could always wear a mask when you grate the soap to prevent inhaling the dust, just about everyone has a mask somewhere since the Pandemic.   I would be careful though in regularly using a homemade “detergent” made with soap in a modern automatic washer.  It could cause a build up of soap...

The greatest thing since sliced bread?

My cookie sheets are Nordic Ware and are aluminum. Aluminum heats more evenly than SS and bakes better cookies. I wouldn’t put a good quality aluminum cookie sheet in the DW. Of course SS wouldn’t be harmed in a DW. Eddie

The greatest thing since sliced bread?

Hell no, cookie sheets don't go in the dishwasher!) I completely agree with you on this Ken. Putting a good quality cookie sheet in the DW is a great way to ruin it. Eddie

The greatest thing since sliced bread?

Re:#13 When you cover a container of food with wax paper and then microwave it the wax stays on the wax paper, it doesn’t drip onto the food. It’s perfectly safe, unlike covering food to be nuked with plastic wrap. Wax paper is by far the safer choice. Eddie

    naphtha fels and the washer

OK, I didn’t realize that you were grating the bars yourself. In that case I’d suggest adding some washing soda and Borax along with the grated Fels Naphtha. If you do a Google search for using grated Fels Naphtha for doing laundry you’ll find several hits for both recipes that use the grated...

    naphtha fels and the washer

I didn’t know that you could buy the “grated” version of Fels Naphtha anymore. Back in 1972 when I bought my vert first washing machine, a used Maytag Model J wringer I used Fels Naphtha powder and it was wonderful! Since it’s a soap, not a detergent it left the laundry very soft and with a...

The greatest thing since sliced bread?

Two more great uses for wax paper are: 1. Lining the bottoms of layer cake pans, just fold a square of wax paper in half, then in half again into a triangle and then once more into a triangle, turn the pan over and place the point of the triangle in the center of the pan and then mark the edge...

The greatest thing since sliced bread?

I still always have wax paper on hand and use it all the time. I personally think that it’s better for wrapping sandwiches because if you wrap them properly the sandwich holds together better because it’s a closer, tighter wrap. A sandwich wrapped in a Baggie has all kinds of room to toss...

The greatest thing since sliced bread?

I’m old enough to remember when sliced bread was packaged and sold in wax paper wrappers, before cellophane, which was an improvement over the wax paper. Some of the kids that I went to school with even used to have their lunch box sandwiches wrapped in the wax paper bread wrappers sometimes if...
