Early KitchenAid KDS-21: The Holy Grail Has Finally Been Found

I finally got it powered up today... And I have some good and bad news. The good news is that the rapid advance timer and controls appear to work perfectly, and that the machine does run. The bad news is that it sounds like the bearings are grinding on the pump motor. I think there may be...

    What is the worst?

No offense to anyone who likes these machines, but… In my opinion, the most miserable washing machine of all time was the F&P style Whirlpool cabrio/maytag bravos/kenmore oasis machines with the floating wash basket. The bearings failed if you looked at them funny, they went off balance far...

Early KitchenAid KDS-21: The Holy Grail Has Finally Been Found

Awesome! Thank you so much! I’ve been thinking, and I’d like to take you up on one of those extra 17 series KitchenAids as well. Just let me know when you want me to come get them. Thanks again, Thatwasherguy.

Early KitchenAid KDS-21: The Holy Grail Has Finally Been Found

Thank you so much! According to what I’ve read on here, the 18-23 series machines did share the same racks. The only real difference was the rollers on the upper rack on the 23 series models, but those can be swapped out. I’ll send you an Email. Thanks, Thatwasherguy.

    Kitchentek Washer?

Very Interesting! I’ve never seen that name before! I wonder if it was an in-house brand for someone, kind of like Wards Signature or Kenmore. Looks like a rebranded late 80’s Speed Queen. Thatwasherguy.

What’s the best detergent for a Vintage dishwasher?

Hey everyone! Hope you are all well. I’ve read on here in the past that modern enzyme based detergents are just about worthless in these classic DW’s. I currently have a NOS box of phosphate based Cascade from 2008, so I should be good for a while, but I’d like to find a more permanent...

what would be your dream vintage dishwasher to own in 2025

This thread is perfectly timed... As I literally just bought my dream dishwasher yesterday; the Hobart KitchenAid KDS-21. This is a very unique machine in that it was technically produced by two manufacturers, Hobart and Whirlpool. The Hobart built versions of this machine are fairly elusive...

Early KitchenAid KDS-21: The Holy Grail Has Finally Been Found

I’m finally back… And I’ve got some information to share about this machine. The couple I bought it from (who were extremely kind) were the original owners. They bought it when they moved the kitchen to a newly built extension on the house in 1984. They chose the KA because they are on a...

    POD Hotpoint Portable Dishwasher

I’m so sorry! I put this on the wrong thread! I meant to put this on my KDS-21 thread. If someone could move it to there, that would be great. Thatwasherguy.

    POD Hotpoint Portable Dishwasher

All Righty Everyone... Break out the pointer sisters and start dancing on the ceiling, because we’re going back to the year 1985. That’s right, I’m fixing to leave to pick this beast up. Wish me luck! Thatwasherguy.

Heads up! Electronic hobart KitchenAid 21 series!

Hi everyone! Hope you’re all well. I was scrolling through marketplace, and just saw this Imperial Selectra 21 dishwasher. I know that the electronics on these didn’t survive well, and that as such, they are extremely rare, so I figured it was worth posting about here. Thatwasherguy...

Early KitchenAid KDS-21: The Holy Grail Has Finally Been Found

Hi everyone! Hope you’re all well. A couple of days ago, I was scrolling through Facebook Marketplace, and saw something that nearly made my heart stop; a Hobart-built KitchenAid KDS-21! I have wanted one of these for at least 6 years, so I was extremely happy to have finally found one ‘in...

tearing down an old hotpoint- and question of proper sleeve bearing lubricant.

Can you please make a video of it once it’s running? I’ve looked all over the internet for a video of one of these 1725 RPM Hotpoints running, and have never found anything. I’ve been curious to hear what they sounded like ever since Norgeway described them as sounding like “a chainsaw...

    KitchenAid dishwasher racks

Email sent! Tom, Thanks for the tip on adding water to the purge cycle. I’ll definitely do that. Kentucky has notoriously hard water, so that should help to dilute the soap as well. Unfortunately, hard water also often means spots on the dishes. Good thing it has a rinse-aid dispenser...

    KitchenAid dishwasher racks

I’ll take you up on that offer... I’m picking up a Hobart-built KDS-21 on Sunday, and one of the issues that it has is rusty racks. I’ll send you an email here directly. Thanks, Thatwasherguy.

    Vintage Maytag Experts

That’s a beautiful CA406! Looks like it’s still in really nice shape. To remove the agitator, I would suggest getting some of those airbags that movers use to lift some of the really heavy pieces of furniture, placing them under the agitator, and pressurizing them as much as you can. Then...

The GE HydroWave: What did you think of them?

Honestly, they’re kind of a guilty pleasure for me… I know they’re not good machines (like at all) from a design standpoint. I particularly despise the design of the motor having the electronic control board made as one with it, forcing one to change both if one or the other should fail. I...

    What? No "Touch-N-Cook"?

I remember reading... That the Westy slant front dryers had a positive airflow drum, so I assume that means that the heater is positive airflow as well. Hope this helps, Thatwasherguy.

What did you think of the F&P style whirlpool washers

No offense to anyone who likes these, but... We owned one of these (two, actually) under the Bravos XL name from 2013-2017, and it was hands down the worst washer that it has ever been my displeasure to operate. You couldn’t use the large tub (a main reason we bought the stupid thing) because...

    Settled on a new range!

Congrats on your new stove! According to the manufacturer code (the first three digits of the model number), your stove was made by Preway. I don’t think I’ve seen a drop-in gas stove before (outside of the micro-sized ones in RV’s, that is). Lots of luck with it! Thatwasherguy.
