    Westy Rollout DW

While the Westinghouse dishwasher was prominently featured at the 1939 World's Fair, the front loading model was available as early as 1936. I have a brochure from Whitehead Metal Products that my dad's aunt and uncle got when they were building their new house that year, and it shows the machine.

    Frigidaire Custom Imperial

I think the one shown is the 30" model. Frances, a neighbor down the street, had the 40" version. She said she wished she had just bought the regular Frigidaire 40" range instead.

Sunshine cookies & crackers I agree with the others here that Hydrox was better than Oreo, and that Cheez-It were better before the Keebler/Kellogg's takeover. My favorite Sunshine cookies were Lemon Coolers.

    Corkscrew Agitators

In 1976 I was working part time at the Sears Catalog Merchant Store that my mom's friend Faye owned. I remember the Dual-Action agitator being a really big deal, and there was a Lady Kenmore washer with it on display in the store. According to Faye, the reason Sears had it as an exclusive for...

1963 GE Wall Oven Not Heating

It's also possible that the double pole circuit breaker has gone bad. Only half may be working, providing only 120 volts instead of 240 to the oven. A loose or burned off wire at the breaker or in a junction box might also be the cause. My neighbor's range wasn't working correctly one time, and...

Is this even possible to do without creating irreparable damage?

No, you would not be able to do that successfully. The openings aren't just holes cut into the top. They have edges formed during stamping at the plant to help keep the top rigid. This is done before they are enamelled.

    Whirlpool Open House 1953 - 16mm

Evidently at that time both washers and dryers were produced in that location. To the best of my knowledge, all washers are now made in the Clyde, OH plant, and dryers in Marion, OH. Both of those are huge facilities, as is their dishwasher factory in Findlay, OH.

    Early Frigidaire dryer

When I was a kid, our neighbor Mary Elizabeth had a dryer like that. At the time her husband was the manager of the hardware store that was the Maytag and Frigidaire dealer in town. One day we saw fire trucks arrive at their house. She had come home and found most of the house filled with smoke...

The Norge washer looks like the one my dad's cousin Mary had. Previously she had some kind of wringer machine, but got the Norge when they moved in 1965.

    9-Millionth Maytag Washer - 16mm Film

Trade-ins In the spring and summer of 1977 I worked at a hardware store that was a Maytag and Frigidaire dealer. There were two price levels on appliances - with trade, and without. There was a room in the back of building C where we put the traded in items for inspection, cleaning, and...

    Fast "High Speed" Burners

My 1953 Westinghouse range has the 6" "Super Corox" high speed unit. My mom had it replaced sometime in the late 1950's, and it failed again by the early 1970's. That time it wasn't repaired. We thought about replacing the unit with a standard one, but were told the control switch would also...

The Tomato Macaroni Bake in the Campbell's ad is good. A friend of the family made it often for church dinners. I don't think I'd like the Cheese Fish Bake, though. Fish with mushroom soup doesn't sound at all appetizing.

Added a New Heater to My Collection

When I was really little we had an old reflector type heater, probably from the 1930's. It was something my grandfather brought when he moved in with us. My mom didn't like using it, as she thought my sister or I would stick our fingers into it. It had an element that screwed into an Edison base...

How did these KA dishwashers get water to the top rack?

We had a KDI-16 from 1971 until the kitchen was torn out in 2006. Don't remember any real issues with things getting clean, but my mom never crowded things in. After she died in 1995, and dad moved to my sister's in late 1997 before passing in 1998, it was only me. I guess I ran it about every 3...

Tomatoes I never knew that Heinz obtained tomatoes from growers in the south. I was under the impression most were grown in northern Ohio and Indiana. Their largest packing facility is in Fremont, OH. My sister knows several people that work there.

Sunbeam was an excellent product until about 40 years ago. I bought my mom a new Sunbeam steam iron a few years before she passed away, which was in 1995. It was a piece of junk compared to the old one from the mid 1970's. It stopped working one day, and when I removed the plate covering the...

How peculiar is my old GE fridge model PDS18ABMALBS?

A lot of people think chlorine bleach kills mold, but I was told by the mold remediation company I dealt with that it doesn't. They used a quaternary ammonium based sanitizer to kill it. They said bleach takes out the stain, but doesn't kill the spores

    A strange question about refrigerators

Many SxS refrigerators didn't have ice and water dispensers, especially in the smaller sizes. I think it was around 1966 when GE introduced a SxS model, and none had dispensers until the 1969 "Custom Dispenser" model, as seen in the "Brady Bunch" kitchen. That model was 36" wide. A smaller...

Oatmeal Cake My mom made one like that, however the recipe called it a "North Carolina Rolled Oats Cake". The last time I had such cake was several years ago when someone made it for the church dinner.

Added a New Heater to My Collection

I bought a Comfort Zone heater at Menards about 7 or 8 years ago. It is a larger version that is 240 volts, and a little less than 4000 watts. It worked fine until a couple years ago, when the fan stopped working. I noticed it smelled like it was overheating, as the elements were still on. I...
