My great aunt had a 59, the last year with no tub brake. We moved into her house in 1972 after she passed away. I was about 12 at the time. It lasted until around the time I graduated from high school when the tranny went out. It lasted a good 15 years with no repairs.

The little boy looks like he could kill. If my Mom dressed me like that I'd be pissed too. Merry Mites and Gay Sprites indeed! What does a woman who wears a lampshade on her head know about designing children clothes anyway?

One of our neighbors had a Western Auto Wizard. Their washer & dryer were in the garage and the door was always open so I used to go in there as a kid and watch it wash. It had a timed fill and the timer was almost identical to the one on a 57 and 58 Speed Queen - indicating the number of...

Sunny yellow in the living room!

Sunny Yellow is my favorite color - even more so than pink. i have this same Maytag washer (a 1962 model) in chocolate brown. The only difference is mine doesn't have the rotary switch for the spray rinse temperature.

I thought this looked like a Norge-made washer when I saw the timeline control panel. And the illustration of the agitator looks like a 50's Norge as well. I've seen old ads for Zenith washers from the 50's. Were they Norge machines as well

    Kenmore washer-letters question!

The 63 and 64 Kenmore alphabet washers had A (hot) & B (warm) for the normal cycle which was in yellow, C in blue for pre-wash or extra rinse, C (hot & E (warm) in pink (63 model) dark yellow (64 model) for wash n wear cycle and F for delicate cycle in turquoise.

Hotpoint Pink Washer and Condensing Dryer set for sale

Those are 1957 machines. It was the first year Hotpoint offered a cold water wash. I believe 57 was the last year for that particular transmission where there is no pause between agitate and spin. Love that wonder dial timer! And that red agitator is a real beauty!

    SWAPPING OUT MACHINES

Sorry your 1-18 has issues. Can you repair them? No, both that machine and one I had for back-up parts had too many problems for me to tackle. A nearby neighbor picked them up. I also needed the room for my 62 Maytag, 68 Speed Queen and Magic Chef Norge.

    SWAPPING OUT MACHINES

After four years of faithful service the 1-18 developed several problems so I moved her out and hooked up the old 1962 Maytag in her place. Miss Maytag seems to be getting along fine with the late 60's solid tub Speed Queen. The Maytag will probably need a new water valve at some point because...

Moving Stuff Around and Downsizing a Bit

I'm glad I got to do a load in the early 60's Hotpoint at your last big wash-in before it left the collection. That was a fun machine. Glad you still have the 56.

Moving Stuff Around and Downsizing a Bit

Robert, thanks for the photos of the Speed Queen and the 65 Norge-Wards. That Wards set is beautiful!

Moving Stuff Around and Downsizing a Bit

What is the copper brown set in the smaller basement room? Are they Norge machines from the mid 60's? If you ever have time I'd love to see a video of the 52 Speed Queen washing with the Coronado agitator!

Moving Stuff Around and Downsizing a Bit

The new set-up looks great, Robert. Just out of curiosity, where is the matching dryer to the Philco? If you have time I'd love some close-up shots of some of the machines you've acquired since I was last there like the older Speed Queen for instance. Last time I was there you still had the 57 model.

    Norge Laundromat!

There was a Norge Village in my neighborhood in southwest Atlanta. The front row of machines closest to the door were mid 60's perforated tub models with the black bakelite agitator and blue ring to indicate load level. I believe these were 14 lb machines. The back row had all the older solid...

Older Maytag should I give to friend who overloads?

I would never give a vintage washer to a person who I knew was going to abuse it like your friend does. Let her go to Home Depot and buy a direct drive piece of plastic crap GE or Whirlpool and tear one of those up. If you are going to give a vintage Maytag to someone like her why not just send...

I was given a blast from my past

A neighbor of ours had an early Wizard Citation washer. It had a normal and short cycle and the timer and cycle layout was very much like that of a late 50's Speed Queen, particularly the 57 model including listing the gallons of water on the timed fill cycle.

NuSoft was around when I was a kid but my mom used pink sta-puff. I never liked Rain Barrel because you were supposed to add it to the wash water and it killed all the suds from the detergent.

    Frigidaire Unimatic washers

Jon Charles, that's a mighty nice looking Kenmore frogeye you've got there!

Maytag blue cheese was produced by the two Maytag grandsons at the Maytag farm which was also located in Newton, Iowa. The original wrapper on the package of cheese was in the same font design as the appliances.
