    forgot to mention that the perished rubber flex has been replaced with some new black PVC stuff .the wringer rollers were very dry and cracked so I sanded them down and then plastered them in Vaseline put them in sandwich bags and left them for a few days and I have to say its worked wonders...

    same thing happened to me recently. A relatively new washer had the tell tale smell of burning .Over here in the UK the socket is usually hidden in a cupboard as mine is .Once i found the faulty plug i cut it off and replaced it[and the socket] with a replacement and now all is fine
