    U.S. coin shortage?

"I did some digging and it appears the last coin shortage was in the 1960's after a switch to clad coinage from silver. People were hoarding older coins which caused a temporary shortage until clad coins flooded the market." No, there was a shortage of pennies in the 1970s, when the price of...

And Now For Something Completely Different - 1920's Ice Queen Fridge

If you look at the freezer door, it clearly says Gibson. Something about that “Ice Queen” plaque just doesn’t look original. It doesn’t match all the nickeled hardware, at least.

What Exactly Is "Moist Cool" Anyway?

Frigidaire Cold Wall Consumers' Research Bulletin discussed this in their September 1949 test of twelve fridges. They say, in effect, what's so great about storing food uncovered?

Let's Talk About That Other Way Of Keeping Cool - Fans!

1917 (latest patent date) 12-in.Westinghouse with six brass blades and a brass cage, supposed to be three-speed but really only works on one now. There's a little rumble indicating a worn bearing but nothing bad. The oscillator works great. Late 1940s 10-in Emerson, which my parents bought when...

Who Is Hoarding All The Bathroom Cleaning Supplies?

I bet you’re right. I don’t think disinfecting is necessary all the time, but it can be useful in keeping mold and mildew down in in the area of the bathtub, for instance. So I make a point of spraying the tub and then busying myself with something else for a few minutes before finishing up.

Who Is Hoarding All The Bathroom Cleaning Supplies?

I happened to find some Lysol Power Shower Foamer (or some such name) at the grocery last week. They had a pretty good supply of it as well as the awful-smelling (IMHO) reformulated Scrubbing Bubbles "Bathroom Grime Fighter," which no longer is a disinfectant, just a cleaner. Anyway, I'd expect...

A Trio Of Stylish Swiss Fancies

I didn't even know the Swiss made laundry equipment. They would be the only ones on the block if someone in this country had them, for sure! Are they as expensive as a Patek Philippe?

ad and product I'd never heard of

Clorox detergent was sold here, too. I liked it, but in all honesty it probably didn't clean as well as Tide With Bleach. Here's another attempt by Clorox to break into the detergent market, dated 1985. Coincidentally, Act was a packet detergent like Hum.

Electric vs gas equipment in schools

Wishing you a speedy recovery, Joe. I'm like you. I had an aversion to anything to do with the school cafeteria and was surprised to find out, years later, that a near neighbor worked there and was renowned locally for her good cooking. Had no idea. My elementary school was heated with coal...
