    Local Sears Hometown store closing.

I was surprised that there were still Sears stores open! Interestingly, for a period up until about 1950 or so they were an innovator in store design and location. They were the first to open car-centric out of downtown stores (perfect example was the Sears on 79th Street in Chicago - not a...

    Swedish Kitchen Advert - 1973

For those not familiar with Sweden.... In the '67 Radion advert it starts off asking "how do you wash these dresses" Wash!! You throw them out is the response. That metal hatch is the standard Swedish apartment building trash chute door. You sometimes even found them in fancier houses too...

    "Off brand" stoves

Ugh, I had a Brown range... Oh, yes, I remember Brown well. I had one in my first adult apartment. It was a total POS full sized range, but junky - very tinny and the oven pilot would blow out at the drop of a hat... My downstairs neighbor growing up had put in a Magic Chef when they...

Circa 1960 OKM de Ville range... 1973 KitchenAid Imperial 2010's Fridgidaire All white! And lots of other crazy small appliances, 70's Cuisinart, 60's Osterizer, 90's Black & Decker Metropolitan toaster, 90's Braun drip-coffee maker, various stovetop espresso makers (from vintage Italian -...

    Swedish Kitchen Advert - 1973

It's not Mary Hartman - I mean, she's a fictional character of course (played by Louise Lasser on the American TV show of the late 70's). I just came across a posting of a real estate ad from the late 30's in Stockholm for a rental flat with a.... wait for it.... dishwasher. I find that hard...

    Sears Stores Disappearing

Mas para tu vida... Never fear, Sears is alive and well south of the border, why, it's even upscale (compared to here - I mean, Audrey could get her Givenchy there)! https://www.sears.com.mx/

    Swedish Kitchen Advert - 1973

Oh yes, the home of cool Jazz, Sweden.... I'm sure that's an apartment building laundry, the small top loader is what people had in their bathrooms in the 60's and 70's. I haven't been able to find the advert for it, but they had a telephonic system in big complexes (either rental or...

1959 Thermador Wall Oven crush: plea for advice

I always associate (well, not always or exclusively) Thermador with Eichler.

    Laundromat Business - Anyone Considering?

It wouldn't surprise me if they gradually disappeared. Chicago, for example, requires laundry facilities in rental buildings. Most rehabs and new construction has in-unit laundry. They are mostly in lower income neighborhoods and Latino areas, though you see a smattering here and there in the...

    Vintage Air Conditioner Help-Advice Needed

Thanks, but it's been replaced It turned out that the chassis was a lot rustier than I'd realized, which I noticed when I carted it out. I'm happy with a new unit that I won't have to worry about for a while, since I don't use ac all that much.

    Swedish Kitchen Advert - 1973

How did I miss the Grace Brothers Kitchen Showroom advert? That Colombian coffee add is really dry - Gevalia's were way more fun!

So... bad news I got somebody in to check the unit, unfortunately the compressor connections are shot and the compressor costs as much as a new unit. While it's in good shape otherwise, the math won't work out for me, so it's off to Abt to buy a Frigidaire (or maybe a Friedrich uni-fit...)...

    Vintage Air Conditioner Help-Advice Needed

Yeah, so another year goes by and he does nothing.... So I'm having a house guest in a couple weeks and I decided, what with our hot weather and all, that I would try to get my big front AC unit going again. So I pulled it, got the control panel open and didn't see anything obvious. Then I...

    The 17 Year Periodical Cicadas

Apparently the brood line aligns fairly closely to the Indiana-Illinois state line so none in the Chicago area (other than normal levels). And a warning - if you have shrimp/shellfish allergies - don't eat them...

Does anyone like old street lights?

Chicago has a history of replacing the heads on the residential street lights - first in the 60's for more light and more recently with LED's. I love the new lights - not orange and better aim so no overspill up into my windows (I'm above them). In one neighborhood I lived in they replaced the...
