Food Courts, Restaurant Circles . . . Why not Discount Grocery Malls?

Interesting tale here on the south side. One of the only Dominick's (if not the only one) that wasn't snapped up by either Jewel, Mariano's or a smaller grocer was in South Shore. There was talk of a no compete, but mostly the LL had a really bad reputation. The Alderman (who also is my...

    P/7 GE Double Wall Oven

That's gorgeous, but I have no room to store big stuff.

    KDS-20 / never used twice / $175 / Palm Springs-Hemet area, CA

I love that it was "never used twice" (is that a Bond film or what?) - means only used once or thousands of times... I had the photo swap used on me - somebody used my photo in a personal ad in Denver iirc, was rather flattered, a friend there just happened to see it and alerted me (I've never...

Food Courts, Restaurant Circles . . . Why not Discount Grocery Malls?

I thought that most grocery stores had "do not compete" or "no compete" clauses in their leases (which also prevents, sometimes, competitors from taking over vacated premises, for instance when a store moves). I also have heard that landlords/developers like one store since it attracts other...

    Audi broke down

My boss had a Mercedes and got rid of it, partially because it was starting to get all kinds of trouble (would be about 6-8 years old if he still had it, got rid of it about 3 years ago) - knocking off his mirror on a mailbox probably didn't help either... He traded it for a Volt because he...

First Catalog Received With a Christmas Wreath on the Cover

I remember seeing something like that toilet seat attachment that was green if the seat was down and shown a target onto the water if the lid/seat was up.

Swedish-built Frigidaire refrigerator / freezer units

I'm surprised to see those here - they are what just about every Swedish house has (equal size fridge and freezer)or aspires to. When I was there everything was white but stainless has come in lately.

    Montgomery Ward Catalog

So I was in Monroe, Wisconsin for Cheese Days this week and learned that the Swiss Colony has purchased Montgomery Wards and runs it and it's warehousing from their various buildings on the west side of Monroe.

    Dryer sheets in europe

While I personally don't like scented clothes, I sometimes like the dryer exhaust smell. We had a French exchange student in grad school who was the epitome of the French cleanliness stereotype. He had an English girlfriend - when she came to visit we though, ah, oh, she'll sort him out. Turns...

    Montgomery Ward Catalog

My grandmother was a Hudson's shopper. She'd save up for a new dress, buy something top of the line, bring it home and dress number six went bye bye (to charity usually). She was draconian in keeping her wardrobe size constant. She had NO casual clothes other than a housedress or two for around...

    Montgomery Ward Catalog

(threadjacking in progress) Sears was way ahead in their store design, once they started building stores, and location scouting. They were one of the first do automobile centered stores with large parking lots, even in the teens and certainly by the 20's, in outer areas of cities and by the...

    Dryer sheets in europe

I personally don't use them, and since I have shared laundry, would prefer my neighbors didn't use them (and they eventually clog the filters from what I gather).

Sears Came through again! New Garage Fridge!

I ended up with a Frigidaire because a) that's what would fit through my doors and b) fit in my available space. Would have preferred a bottom freezer, but I've had no trouble with mine in, what, four or five years. Probably should have had the ancient Westinghouse fixed, but my electric bill...

    Montgomery Ward Catalog

No, I think there was a store on State Street - a newish building from the mid-60's in fact. Long gone at this point. Their warehouse and HQ (a 60's high-rise) are all condominiums today. The river facing buildings are not bad - high ceilings and balconies overlooking the river.

    Montgomery Ward Catalog

Wait a minute.... Now that I think about it there was one in the loop somewhere, but we never went there. I mean, we had Wieboldt's and Goldblatt's - hardly 'high end upper bracket top drawer' stores... And Sear's.

Finn Juhl Danish Modern modular Cresco unit.

My parents spent a lot of money over the years at Scan (we had one in our local cooperatively owned shopping center). I think they were bought out by Scandinavian Design which still has one store in the Chicago areas, in Skokie.

I made a fennel cream sauce for pasta as an experiment, came out pretty well.
