Out with the old, in with the old

A Corvette? Did you own a highbrow drive-in theater?

Looking for "new" used vehicle opinions again...

As a Volvo owner (Ford Free 850, and previously a 245, many moons ago), they are tanks, but not gas sippers by any means, especially compared to my old Civic which didn't need feeding very often at all. One of my friends had a Satan that just wouldn't die - he finally gave it to a relative who...

Refineries in Mid-West Have Fuel Glut

I've been hearing that India is also driving demand for oil and that they are changing how oil is priced (more volatility due to less reliance on futures, iirc). As a sidenote comment about Australia. Long term Australian friend of mine came with her husband and daughter to visit the States a...

On the hunt for an old gas stove. Not just any.....

The Hardwick Yeah, I was drooling over it (it's in gorgeous, impeccable condition). My neighbor is the listing agent and said if I wanted it, I most likely could have it* - if only it had TWO ovens instead of the rotisserie. I missed the estate sale, the owner had like 40 whisks.... *Free...

On the hunt for an old gas stove. Not just any.....

Hopefully the link works; poor shot of a Hardwick(e) with legs and wood handles in flawless condition that might become available to carry out on Chicago's south side. The apartment was owned by a chef/cookbook writer. It's a one oven - broiler rotisserie rather than dual ovens (like my OKM)...

Move-in ready if your name is "Porky"

Isn't that Maude's oven? Florida and Mrs. Naugatuck are long gone!

Gallery of 1960s Kitchens & Baths

"Penthouse" Everybody's been passing that 70's time capsule around - it's NOT a penthouse, it's in one of the few non-lakefront high-rise complexes in Chicago, known as Winston Towers (1-5), often called Weinstein Towers (it's in West Rogers Park about as far as you can go north in that part of...

Let's Talk About Heating Shall We?

Outdoor Sensors Outdoor sensors (and weather data) also allow for more sophisticated thermostats/controllers to anticipate heat needs (the heating load) and changing indoor temps and adjust before there is a noticeable change inside.

Let's Talk About Heating Shall We?

Gas in Norway I've never seen any residential gas in Norway (may have changed for the wealthy now, they may have propane ranges/cooktops) - I don't believe that there is any extent gas infrastructure even in older parts of Oslo (may have been in the past however). Friends of my parents lived in...

    AGA cooker question..

That's like those old gravity furnaces, once they're on, they're on for the season! Shoot, 100k! I could buy a nice vintage cooperative in Chicago for that! Funny thing about AGA is they were originally a Swedish company as I understand it and were sold long, long, long ago to a British...

    Remembering The Old Country

My dad came from Poland (via Romania, Vichy France, Franco's Spain [was in prison there] and the UK with various WWII adventures) and arrived in the early 50's. His biggest imports are haggling and making sure their house was well cared for (or their co-op as the case may be). My mom's family...

    Just finished shopping at Aldi

Debit Cards I think that debit cards are easier for merchants as well - instant payment, no paper, no returned checks, etc. I remember being astounded in Minnesota that parking garages and fast food outlets took checks (I paid for pizza in college with checks, but that was in the dawn of debit...

    MORE POWER TO YA!

Aren't the individually switched receptacles (mostly) a UK thing? IIRC I've read that UK wiring standards are a bit different than on the continent.

Town Natrual and LPG/Propane Gas Stove Connections

When I rebuilt parts of my range, the flame was super high and had to be adjusted down (from natural gas to natural gas though). How different was town gas though? Off topic somewhat, I've seen pictures from Europe (continental) where they had rubber hoses for gas stoves/ranges kind of like...

    Just finished shopping at Aldi

IIRC Tesco started Fresh & Easy, thought it had died already. It seems that the British grocery chains can't seem to make it work in the US (Sainsbury's, the higher end chain, failed pretty badly I think).

    Stove Recommendation Needed!

I have nearly the same range as the folks in Miller Beach - the oven is narrow but deep and, despite that, has fairly big capacity (and excellent temperature holding).

Let's Talk About Heating Shall We?

Interestingly, Norway, which is generally a bit colder than the US, is nearly 100% electric, heating-wise. AND it's cheaper to heat with electricity than wood there, believe it or not (cheap hydro power). Houses, at least newer houses, are better insulated than the US norm, but not as well as...

    Round ceiling diffusers

I've seen them used in residential settings in Japan in "residential" sizes - I worked for a Japanese client who used them out in Schaumberg for a huge industrial showroom.

Closets in old houses. Probably a question for Launderess

There is often a big variation in closet provision in older houses and apartments. I grew up in a building built in 1906 and it had four closets (plus pantry) for three bedrooms. However, immediately before that we lived in an apartment that was only maybe, at most, ten years newer, more like 6...

    Round ceiling diffusers

A friend of mine had ducted AC installed maybe 10-15 years ago and the upstairs registers (in the ceiling) are circular diffusers. I'm a fan of eyeball/nozzle registers but you rarely see them in the US.
