People often mention that U.S. cars of the 1970s were poor quality, and yet my 1978 Ford LTD Landau lasted over 300,000 miles with one transmission overhaul, and did better than 20 MPG on the highway.    

Because General Motors was primarily an automobile manufacturer, I'd say yes.

Our 1961 GE Filter Flow would leave oil spots on my mom's nursing uniforms when the transmission started to leak.  It went through 3 transmissions in 15 years. 

If the o-ring suppled by Whirlpool is no good, perhaps one of the correct size and hardness (durometer) could be sourced from a place like McMaster-Carr.

There was a time when consumers expected 2 or more decades out of a major appliance.   Today's consumer shops by price, and that changes everything.
