    laundromat season

Speed changer If you are able to get your hands on a copy of Audel's Appliance Guide (long out of print), it will have a breakdown of the speed changer, both for the Laundromat and for the Bendix-type units. Audel published generic repair manuals for all kinds of equipment-refrigeration...

    Maytag Epic

No tangles I've had a Duet HT since May, and have not had any problem with tangled items.

    LG Nighmare continues

LG service This is not the first time I've seen postings re: poor service/parts availability for the LG machines. If someone will post a link to their service dept., I'l be happy to get in touch with them: since I service appliances, I'll be happy to tell them that I don't recommend their...

    Maytag Epic

Actually, these machines are the Whirlpool Duet machines with a slightly different look and the same components-they are also made in Germany, presumably at the Bauknecht facility which Whirlpool bought. The baffles in the one I saw at H-D were the same as the ones in my Duet HT.

GE, Frigidaire or Whirlpool FL Washers

Which FL... I had a Frigidaire (Kenmore) FL, and the tub bearings were shot after 6 years-pretty pathetic. I had recommended the machine to four other folks, and two of these machines also fried the tub bearings. I now own a Whirlpool Duet HT (the one with the heater and 1250 rpm spin) and...

New Maytag Epic to replace Neptune

repackaged Duets Reading between the lines in the Interest Alert article on the new Epics, it would appear that the features mentioned on the Epics are identical with those of the Duet machines. Even the prices of the washers appear to be the same, though the dryers are a bit higher.

    My Mothers Bendix.....

Motor brushes I'm surprised to see that Miele and other machines are still using brushes (series-wound d.c. motorsl Many brands, including Whirlpool Duet, Frigidaire, Maytag et. al. have gone to 3-phase induction motors (except in some cases on their smallest machines) driven by a...

Help in buying a new WD set, need more info

Duet I bought a Duet pair (Duet HT w/heater, gas dryer) in May, and couldn't be happier with them. The belt is not really a problem-it's very rare for them to break or come off. I have no experience with the LG machines-I've heard that they work well. However, unless something has changed...

    Good HE detergents

For the longest time, I've been using Tide He powder in my frontload machines (I now own a Duet HT). However, I'd like to go to something more environmentally friendly. Does Ecover make a He powder, and if so, does anyone have experience with it-is it any good? What about other brands?

    The demise of GM Frigidaire.

GM/Frigidaire Just my opinion-the old GM Frigidaire washers were some of the best ever produced by U.S. industry. My mom had 3 of them; one at home, one in our vacation home, one in an investment property. Not one of them lasted less than 20 years, and only one ever required a repair, when a...

Quiet washers for 2nd floor laundry room?

2nd floor laundry If you choose a front-loader, the Duet models are probably your best bet, since they seem to have the best balancing protocols; they won't let the machine go into high-speed final spin unless the load is pretty well balanced. Having said that, the floor in the laundry needs to...

Advice on purchasing a new Duet

Duet cycle times Regarding long cycle times on the Duets-even if I choose Sanitary (heated) wash, extra wash time, prewash and extra rinse, I can't get the time readout anywhere near 3 hours. I suppose this could happen if one is supplying the machine with "hot" water which is too cool, i.e...

    The Evolution of the Spin

Spin speeds and how they got there A little history and technology might help explain the "spin evolution." The Bendix machines had a spin speed of approximately 310 rpm. These machines had a split-phase or capacitor-start motor which ran at a constant 1725 rpm, and was direct coupled to a...

    9/12 POD - Branded laundromats

Helpee-Selfee Up here in Wellfleet, Massachusetts on Cape Cod, I remember as a little kid going with my mom to "Ye Olde Helpee-Selfee Laundry" on Commercial Street overlooking Duck Creek. They had rows of old Westinghouse Laundromat round-front FL washers, with the timer knobs on top, which...

    Best New Energy Efficient Washer?

Duet I'm extremely happy with my Duet HT. The regular Duet (without heater, fewer cycles) holds just as much laundry and usually comes in at under $1,000. (The HT is about 1300 or so). I've heard that LG's are good, but parts and service is a real problem. Sudsman had a bad experience with...

    Best/Worst Ever Concensus

best & worst I have limited experience with the vintage machines, but I'd say that the best I've used were the early '60's Frigidaire. The worst-and I love front-loaders, by the way-would be the Bendix for its lethargic spin, followed by the late '60's Westinghouse Laundromat for its extremely...

    disposer disasters (near)

Disposer funnies For years I've had an ISE 77, top of the line when I put it in about 14 years ago (I've rebuilt it once). I grind corncobs and bones in it, and never had a problem. Note that the rubber "hopper-topper" which prevents stuff from being ejected does deteriorate with time, and...

    Speaking of Drain Pump Motors

Noisy pumps The current FL's, including my Duet HT, uses a pump powered by a cheap shaded-pole motor with an odd-looking 2-lobe rotor enclosed in a plastic housing, rather than the traditional round "squirrel-cage" rotor. I doubt that there is anything which can be done about the noise. You're...

Advice on purchasing a new Duet

New Duets For what it's worth, I bought a Duet set-w/all the trimmings-from Sears back in May. So far, I couldn't be happier with them. I got the washer w/the heater and the 12 cycles (Duet HT), and the 1250 r.p.m. spin. By purchasing from Sears, I have the option of having warranty service (if...
