Trying to lift stain from vintage silk scarf

Well, plain carbonated water has been successfully used for a long time as a "first aid" remedy for all kinds of stains on textiles and sodium citrate is sometimes used as a chelating agent in detergents. Didn`t have high expectations either, so I can see your objections, but I think it was...

Trying to lift stain from vintage silk scarf

Hi Eddie we`re on the same page, a baking soda and lemon juice paste should be safe for the fabric and for sure is worth a try too.

Trying to lift stain from vintage silk scarf

I`d spot treat it with undiluted hydrogen peroxide the type you might find in your medicine cabinet. I`d check on a small area for color fastness first, but considering what you tried so far you can be pretty sure it is color fast. Anything that has a very high or very low pH like strong acids...

Right on cue...rinse aid dispenser starting to leak in Maytag Dishwasher

The problem is if you dilute water based products with water you will also dilute the preservatives that protect perishable product ingredients from going off. In a worst case scenario you might end up with a stinky mess in the dispenser from bacteria or mold growth. I`d rather go without any...

Be a Good Mixer: Part Two

Not sure about the year of manufacture as I got it from Ebay (we were a Krups 3Mix and Kenwood family) but 1959-1969 as mentioned in the link seems plausible. It`s only 85 Watts so it`s a bit underpowered for kneading jobs but nonetheless those little mixers came with dough hooks along with the...

Be a Good Mixer: Part Two

Thanks to this thread I finally brought myself after months of putting it off to bring this beauty back to life. I rarely use my vintage toys because I prefer the conveniences of modern appliances for daily use, but I follow the rule that anything vintage in my home has to be in a good and...

Wrinkle-free shirts good for 30 washes

These treatments are hydrophobic by their nature which in turn makes oil based stains harder to shift. Same thing as with synthetics like polyester.[this post was last edited: 2/26/2023-10:12]

Wrinkle-free shirts good for 30 washes

I`m surprised your shirts wrinkle-free finishing is only supposed to be good for 30 washes. We`ve had a brand name called "Cottonova" in the 60`s and 70`s which according to the ad was the finest boil-proof no-iron cotton. Some washers even had Cottonova cycles which were more or less just easy...

Biden admin proposes more stringent efficiency standards

I don`t miss the up to 20 Watts ghost loads of some older electronics nor the old fashioned incandescent lamps on my power bill. I also wouln`t go back to a resistant wire heated clothes dryer even if I could have a TOL one for free. For some things the free market seems to work very well...

    New dishwasher in the dumpster...

Thanks for the detailed explanation about legality. When I was a kid in the 70s to early 80s we had hard rubbish collection twice a year and appliances were still part of it. Those were the days! I found lots of vintage small appliances and as I was always equipped with pliers and...

    New dishwasher in the dumpster...

What a great find! Finding a new toy for free is so much more fun than buying something. I think a top spray arm (or nozzle) is only necessary if you block most of the middle spray arm. Like if you wash a large cookie sheet in the upper rack. Is it legal in Australia to take things from a...

    Combatting urine & body odors

I don`t even like wool pullovers because they seem to fill the whole room with a wet sheep smell when you dry them indoors after washing. Much better than wet dog smell, but still... LOL Isn`t terribly itchy to have wool on such a sensitive body part?

FL - Heating Element Failure with pictures. Why ?

I think most of the damage was done from the heavy lime scale build up, not the cleaning. If you use a good quality detergent and use enough of it according to water hardness, soil level and load size you should never have a problem with lime scale and a failing element again.

    Washer That Maintains Temperatures?

MOL Miele model WXF660 has an "AllergyWash" option mentioned in the operating instructions. "This option should be used where high standards of hygiene are required. Energy consumption is increased to lengthen temperature holding times" and so on Some of Bosch`s stain options might be useful...

LG WM3600 cycle times are SLLOOOOWWWWWW.

Matt, I think you`re wrong on this one. I does make a lot of sense to temper the incoming water and then reheat it at least if cleaning efficiency is a priority. Even if the enzymes in a detergent aren`t bothered that much up to 60°C/140°F some stains are certainly altered by 150°F incoming...

Does Anyone Still Use Boil Wash Temps?

My preference for traditional washing habits must be just about as well known to everybody here like Tom`s aversion to the Republicans, so this time I won`t bore you guys with the details again and just leave it at that ;-)

    Washing bamboo pillowcases

Rayon can be super sensitive like Acetate fibers to quite resistant like Lyocell fibers. Seems to depend a lot on what the primary cellulose fiber has been sourced of, what the manufacturing process was like and finally weather the wet pulp was died before extruding and spinning or if the...
